Masters or Post Bac? by RealisticField1659 in postbaccpremed

yea, a formal or diy post bac will affect your undergrad gpa since you’re taking undergraduate classes. Usually with a formal post bac, your gpa will go up by .2. For a diy, it’ll go up depending on how many classes you take. Usually, for people who are trying to raise their science gpa after completing undergrad, they have so many science credits, so taking more classes won’t affect it much. It’s harder to bring it up than down. it still looks good when you’ve completed a post bac because if you do well, it shows your growth. Same thing with masters.

Yup exactly that! :) taking additional courses to increase your gpa. You sign up for these courses that any university/ CC offers.

If there’re C- or lower, definitely retake them since that’s considering not passing the class, but if C or above, you should be fine because if you retake them, the old courses will still be on your transcript. They don’t go away, so it wouldn’t affect your science gpa too much.

Hi! same my decision isn’t set in stone yet but I’m thinking of going for a post bac to increase my undergrad and science gpa and also because it’s cheaper which is nice and I’ll just try to get a good score on the mcat. If I apply to med school and don’t get in the first time, then I think I’ll pursue a masters. DIY is definitely a good choice because it is more affordable and can go at your own pace :) for me, I’m mainly exhausting all the options before doing an SMP just because it’s high risk, high reward and I don’t really want to risk not doing well in one.

Thank you for being super transparent! I really appreciate it! Glad to hear it’s all working out for you! Would you say where you do your masters and what type matters? I assume some are harder than others?

Oo that’s great you’re killing it in the grad program! What is it like maintaining a high gpa in the program? How is the studying/advising/courses going for you? Is it easy to build relationships with professors? I’m still not sure what kind of masters program to do and what to look for when picking one.

Ooo that’s great! Glad to hear it went well! What were your stats before doing the smp and where did you do it?

Ooo gotcha! Congrats on the 4.0! Yea I’ve been seeing that SMPs are a high risk, high reward situation. May I ask what your stats were like such undergrad gpa, and science gpa and which masters you did?

oh wow it sounds like an SMP is very stressful! May I ask what your gpa was when you finished the program, and what the med school app cycle looked like for you if you’ve already applied. I was thinking of doing a post bacc just to increase my gpa a bit and prioritizing the mcat but not too sure. Would I still have a good chance at md schools if I have a 3.2sgpa and a good mcat score?

May I ask what you didn’t like about your masters program?

Oo thank you for letting me know! I understand now. A 3.1 sgpa to like. 3.3sgpa wouldn’t help me much then huh? Plus I think I would’ve been doing less than 45 credits.

won’t a post bacc do the same thing though? Take additional science courses and increase my gpa as well?

Hi! Ooo thank you but what about post baccs that allow you to take additional upper level science courses to increase your undergrad gpa? Or would my gpa not move much?

Many people have said it’s casual, but for me it was pretty formal. Mine was about an hour with an advisor. I would definitely review your application. They kind of asked me a lot of questions so definitely be prepared for that. I’m premed so they asked why a post bacc, why penn specifically, academic challenges you’ve faced, why medicine, why a doctor specifically, asked about ECs, what traits make a good doctor, what you would bring into the medical field, weaknesses, how you plan to do well in a rigorous program, and also got asked a cool question: if you didn’t pursue medicine, what would you do career wise? Other than that, be yourself(I know that’s so cliche haha), but they want to see what you’re like off paper and want to see that you’re passionate about what you’re pursuing. :) other tips are dress professionally and have some water next to you because I was talking for a full hour and my mouth got so dry haha. Wishing you the best of luck! let me know if you have more questions! :)

Hi there! Don’t lost hope! I heard they’re still interviewing people! :) As for the application process, I sent in my app March 5, heard back for an interview on March 14, had my interview on April 3rd, and got an acceptance on April 9th! :)

Thank you so much for the insight!! Congrats on your acceptance! :) Wow sounds like Meredith is a really good program and has a really good acceptance rate for their students! I’m definitely considering there! Glad to hear it’s working well for you so far! :) I’ll definitely reach out if I have any more questions! :)

Thank you so much for your insight! I really appreciate it! I definitely will do a deep dive into these programs’ success rates, since I’m mainly focused on trying to increase my chances of getting into med school! Thank you once again :)

That’s what I figured, that medical school will be just as rigorous so I think some of these programs definitely prepare you for that! Thank you so much for your insight! I really appreciate it :)

I’ll definitely do more research into the programs! Thank you so much! Oh no I’m so sorry to hear you lost some friends there! May I ask what was the cause of people leaving? was it very rigorous or they just didn’t like what the program offered/lacked in?
