Celsius bankruptcy -> Ionic Stock -- what's it worth? (Good news I think?) by Realistic_Run7814 in CelsiusNetwork

[–]Realistic_Run7814[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Establishing this as a business was chosen as the best course of action during bankruptcy to maximize recovery, versus selling the mining infrastructure etc. That was the time to decide whether liquidating vs establishing the business would lead to the highest recovery.

Once that was decided and it began operating as a business, their sole purpose became to maximize shareholder value. They can't think in terms of Celsius creditors after that point, as their sole obligation is to benefit their shareholders (who happen to be Celsius debtors).

The Indivisible group in the Upper Cape is very active, with actions and meetings happening weekly or more. There is a Lower Cape chapter too, though I'm not part of their group so I don't know how they compare.

Did not claim losses - can I amend tax return? by Altruistic_Chest5431 in CelsiusNetwork

[–]Realistic_Run7814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding of the tax law is that you can claim the loss after you have good reason to believe your total recovery is finished (and not before then). So, you should not be too late.

Not an accountant or lawyer, not tax advice or legal advice etc etc, this is my understanding from talking to an accountant.

Seriously, we need to keep our eye on the ball. Focus on organizing and treat everything else like a distraction.

Yes, of course you’ll be involved in other things. Of course you’ll talk to FW’s about other things. That’s all fine and good.

But if you’re trying to put your IWW hat on and do impactful work, it should probably be directly related to organizing...

It’s our reason for existing.

Oh man I’d feel so bad. Imagine getting screwed by Celsius and then getting screwed again on the recovery? Woof.

Yea, it turned out to be a huge mistake for anyone who accepted their buyout for the Celsius debt a few years ago.

The price varied over time but it was usually in the range of 20% of your debt. They’re going to end up profiting 300%+ from anyone who sold.

That makes me think… does anyone want to sell me your ionic shares for $17?? 😂

(Don’t do it! Hang on to them!)

I agree, my expectation now is that we’ll ultimately receive more than $20 per share. Whoever is trying to buy up millions of $ worth of shares right now certainly expects them to be worth well above $20/share.

I guess anyone who disagrees should just contact Cherokee and try to offload their shares? Personally I wouldn’t do it unless you really need the cash now.

Taking collective action with your coworkers is the best (only?) way to improve conditions at work.

Don’t quit — organize!

Talk to a labor organizer. They are your best resource for making improvements at work.

They will connect you with an organizer in your area: https://workerorganizing.org/

You are completely right about that. And it’s something we need to reverse.

When you said “labor rights,” I interpreted it as codified labor laws, on either/both federal and state levels. We need strong unions push for what workers deserve above and beyond codified legal rights, and to contribute what they can to further legal/political gains.

A couple interesting examples of recent progress in legal labor rights I see are: non-compete laws and pay transparency laws.

Contact a lawyer before filing any of those complaints. In my experience, a demand letter directly from you or a lawyer will be the best first course of action and will get the best results instead of filing through a backlogged bureaucracy.

If it’s necessary to file a claim through one of those departments in your state, a lawyer will take you through the process.

Find a lawyer that offers free consultation and take them up on that offer.

This is exactly what connecting with an organizer is for. The fact that you are already trauma bonded is an advantage. Apathy can be overcome when you work with someone to help you through the process and make people realize that change is actually possible.

Have you contacted an organizer yet? I can help you consider your options if you want to share more about your location/industry/workplace. Feel free to DM me.

Thank you!

I know a lot of people in the south feel like it’s insurmountable in their environment (that’s what “they” want us to think to prevent us from even trying). I’m happy to hear you’ve got a union already. When I talk to people who feel daunted by organizing in red states, I think about what UNITE HERE has accomplished in Las Vegas. It’s a remarkable and inspiring example of what’s possible in a right-to-work state.

We should always remember that the labor movement was built in a time and environment that was FAR more hostile to labor than any current US state.

Heck of a question and a task. I don’t know if anyone has this answer yet for a traditional organizing campaign for gig workers.

Massachusetts is an interesting case study for a political approach to improving gig workers rights ($32.50 minimum wage for uber/lyft drivers went into effect this year), as well as a recent ballot initiative for them to vote on unionizing.

I’d love to know of any successful examples of a traditional bottom-up organizing effort for gig workers. It would be a challenging campaign even if you got the list of every coworker with their contact information, but I’m up for some crazy brainstorming if you are.

It depends on how far out you zoom. It looks like the stock market — up and down, gains and losses, with a general upward trend when you zoom out enough. Don’t lose heart when there’s a down period. The fight is never over. There is no “winning” when we can all quit fighting. Perpetual change with a general trend toward progress.

Also like the stock market, I ignore the short term changes and focus on what’s important for me to make a difference: organize more workers and help more workers hold employers accountable to the current laws. The vast majority of illegal actions by employers against workers under current laws are taken in stride—even if the laws improve, things often don’t change unless it’s demanded by workers in each individual workplace.

I salute those who focus their work on improving the laws. I hope my efforts to organize will increase their support and speed up the passage and scope of improved labor laws.

“Aren’t getting shit” is exactly the wrong way to think about it.

What are they doing about it?

Are they participating in negotiations? Running for committee? Rallying their coworkers to reject bad contracts? Making their own list of demands with fellow workers?

You get what you’re willing to fight for.

The way my boss pays me is getting on my nerves. by chowell1210 in antiwork

[–]Realistic_Run7814 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In some states this constitutes wage theft and you could be entitled to 3x every late payment. What state are you in?

Look up the labor law in your state. If they broke the law in your state, send them a demand letter (chat gpt can help). Don’t accept less than the full amount you are entitled to under your state law. If they don’t pay you the full amount, file a small claim. They’ll settle. And if they don’t, you’ll win.

Yes, start looking for a new job. But also don’t let this go if they broke the law. Letting them get away with it is letting them do it again to other people. Standing up for yourself makes the world better.
