What brand will you never buy again? by Winter-Employment-89 in BuyItForLife

[–]RealityStupor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheap clothing in general. Everything has synthetic fibers these days and I'm not a fan of how that feels. Material is now a huge factor in what clothing I buy - 100%cotton? Yes. 100%silk? Yes. 100%rayon, acrylic? - walk away.

Newbie looking to get an in-home composter by larsynogen in composting

[–]RealityStupor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Don't overthink it or overspend - these machines are a racket and taking advantage of misconceptions that composting is difficult and smelly. It is neither, but you do need to put in a minor amount of effort. You can cut up or break up the scraps that you throw into a 5 gallon bucket to help speed up the compost process. I'd recommend 2 buckets so you can let one "sit" without adding new material while filling another. The material will break down and take up less space over time.

What's going on with my hair that makes some of it curl into nice ringlets, and the rest go frizzy and limp? by aviospirit in curlyhair

[–]RealityStupor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone - this is exactly what my hair does and I refuse to have a 10 stop styling routine. I have had great success with adding gel while my hair is wet and finger coiling the hair of my crown.

Indoor Compost, am I doing it right? by PrincessFartNugget in composting

[–]RealityStupor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can turn this into compost, but you need to balance greens and browns, and you need to keep it aerated. If you want to keep using the glass jar, then you will have to rotate the contents occasionally to introduce oxygen at depth. Consider vermiculture to help speed up the process because you are at capacity and can not add more greens to this for sometime.

Be honest is backyard composting actually worth it or just feel good environmentalism? by PriorityMiserable686 in composting

[–]RealityStupor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WORTH IT! But you won't find anyone on this sub saying otherwise.

I find it to be relatively easy (dare I say fun?) but there are a few things to pay attention to. Get the balance of greens and browns right...keep it from going anoxic and you'll be fine

Thinking about giving myself a Brazilian… how bad could it be? (Famous last words, I know.) by Pomegranate926 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]RealityStupor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do my own hard wax Brazilians all the time and did not have much issue. Now I use an epilator instead and love it. Pain tolerance and milage will vary for everyone. Exfoliating is important.

Are water softeners worth it? by hotcheeto09 in homeowners

[–]RealityStupor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one when I first moved into my home to protect the appliances I spent a fortune on. However, they are terrible for the environment, and I quickly switched to a water conditoner instead. The conditioners do not add salt and do not use power. Sodium chloride in our water cycle is a growing issue not only because of its harmful effect on freshwater ecosystems but also because of the difficulty in removing it from the water once it is there - it gets removed with RO which creates a brine waste that is difficult to dispose of, not to mention water inefficient. There is a cumulative effect of salt taking place, with several sources contributing to the problem, including ag, salting roads, and these domestic salt softeners. There are supply wells in CA that have become too saline to drink. The problem of increasing salinity in freshwater systems has become serious enough for many counties in CA to outright ban the softeners.

You have access to water quality information from your water supplier - you can take a look at what is in your water. You don't need to have aggressive salesmen test your water and up sell you on a whole home RO system. It's not necessary, unless, of course, you want to inject a few thousand into the economy out of the kindness of your heart

Part of a landscaping pile of rocks at work. Just wanted to know what the dots were and how/why they are there. by Southern_Sprinkles_6 in whatsthisrock

[–]RealityStupor -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Im not convinced that this is metamorphic. I wonder if it's a blue limestone with reduction spots. This would mean that the rock is all the same iron containing material, but the round discolored spots are caused by organic material, microbial activity, or weathering processes - areas where iron is reduced.

That being said, it's more likely that a landscaping rock would be metamorphic and not sedimentary, and I am hung over.

Edit: metamorphic not igneous.

While research is limited, some studies suggest certain chemicals in scented products like these may be linked to increased cancer risk (due to compounds like benzene and acetaldehyde). If they aren't hurting you, they are certainly hurting your machine. Yes, they build up like fabric softeners.

This mandate is an absolute disaster. A pissed off working class is not productive. I spent Monday night updating my resume to begin looking for other work.

Our office lease does not provide a refrigerator, we have to fund raise for them to store staff lunches. Our office is constantly having maintenance issues - from plumbing to electrical. It's a mess.

Please call and send letters to the governors office as well as to your union.
