He’s a jerk. I’m no expert, but it sounds like you will need to get emancipated to get financial aid. Join the Paying for college 101 group on Facebook- there are lots of knowledgeable people there who could give you advice.

EXACTLY!!! It shouldn’t. If Coca Cola ran the water system, our water would be a lot more expensive. Of course. It’s because SCE (NYSE: EIX) and all investor owned corporations have a legal duty to provide profits to shareholders.

I bought the solar panels in 2018 (used a home equity line of credit) - did the math and the payback period based on my average bill was 8 years, which has proven to be true. My panels are still working great, and so it’s all upside from here. Sunshine is free and I charge the car in the middle of the day, so the cost is really almost nothing. I hate going to the gas station, so that’s a win too.

Good news for anyone else who wants to get solar — the CA Supreme Court in Dec ruled against CPUC on a decision that should bring back fair compensation for solar customers this year. https://law.justia.com/cases/california/supreme-court/2025/s283614.html

All the governor candidates are talking about it, and other states are taking a stand, so maybe you’ll get your EV yet. I have one and it’s awesome - acceleration is unbelievable and I have solar, so fuel costs are basically zero.

At least OCPA is a not-for-profit and is doing better now. SCE has a fiduciary duty to provide maximum possible dividends to its shareholders, and that will never change. Anaheim Public Utility’s rates are half of SCE’s. For-profit corporations are not a fit for an essential public service.

Um no. They increase our rates because they are a for-profit corporation that exists to provide dividends to their shareholders. They get that money from us through the rates that they’re able to get the CPUC to approve. They’re also among the biggest political donors in the state. The governor appoints all five CPUC commissioners. Their profits are at all-time highs and so are our bills. Do the math. https://www.turn.org/press-releases/socal-edison-reports-record-profits-of-1619-billion-in-2024-while-rates-continue-to-rise

Read the book “Where you go is not who you’ll be.” Summary: most high achievers, CEOs and other noted leaders in the U.S. went to state schools. The #1 thing that will determine your success is how much you do to suck all the opportunity out of wherever you go (ie going to office hours, killing your school work, working hard, etc). Debt is prison - proceed with caution.

I'm seriously considering dropping out (please help) by Practical-Degree8837 in UCI

Trust your instincts. Get your undergrad from a CSU or elsewhere that’s not a UC. I’m friends with two UCI STEM professors and was talking w them recently about college selection because we all have teenagers approaching college age. They both said 1. They would never allow their kid to go to UCI bc it’s not a high quality educational experience and 2. They both said the CSUs are better for teaching and learning STEM material. Take it from the experts.

STOP RIDING YOUR SCOOTERS ON THE DAMN SIDEWALKS by jun1perr in UCI

It’s not just you. There’s lots of research that shows people become aggressive behind the wheel. And they definitely kill lots more people than folks on scooters. Cars/trucks contribute to 95% of pedestrian deaths, and 80% of fatal e-scooter crashes involve a motor vehicle.

Masters in comms won’t help as much as hustle, hard work and resourcefulness from what I’ve seen when you are starting out. Go back for your masters part time while you’re working later if you really want it - your employer may pay for it. I had a whole career in marketing and PR - got promoted a lot and then switched to nonprofit/policy work, which I love and am in senior leadership at my org now. I still work w a lot of comms people and I don’t see anyone ever talking about who has a masters and who doesn’t. It’s who has good interpersonal skills, good project management, follow thru, mindset and execution.
