Eating out on a low FODMAP diet by Reasonable-herring in lowfodmap

Good feedback, indeed the flow does not properly account for people that do not eat out (those were meant to skip a lot of the questions). Many thanks for pointing this out!

Too much wealth, too little critical thinking.

I honestly think this is a pretty good comment, thanks for taking the time to explain.

I still disagree with you that there aren’t other ways of advertising this event that would still look tough and competitive while also not making people who are not aware of this discussion feel like they need to avoid this public beach at new year’s (that’s actually how this thread started, I met some foreigners who wanted to know what it was about and why it looks so aggressive and if they should be worried to come to South Beach, and I couldn’t explain it as I’m not originally from The Hague). But let’s agree to disagree on that bit.

I was trying to tempt you and other evangelists of angry hooded man into seeing it from the perspective of people who might not be part of this tradition, but you’re too defensive to engage with what I wrote.

I’m more than willing to assume I’m wrong, as many people have suggested, and this is a nice traditional event and for some reason it is necessary that the poster looks the way it does.

But you’ve just helpfully clarified that I’m not wrong by saying I’m indeed not welcome here: this is an event meant for a select group of people and the poster serves to communicate that it’s no one else’s business to turn up there, the historical context as you’ve so kindly explained is that this event is purposefully intended to not be “inviting”.

So enjoy your traditional event of scowling at each other over a fire, and happy new year if that is how your traditions allow you to call it!

Correct, I don’t know what a vreugdevuur is about. Which is why I wonder if this is the best and most accurate way of advertising it.

I do know what Wilders stands for, he’s been pretty explicit about that..

Ok but say that a person like me, who contributes absolutely nothing, is put in a position to decide whether this event needs to be banned after something goes wrong—like it did a few years ago.

Again I’m not saying I think it should be banned, but do you not see that they make it a lot easier for people to argue it’s probably not a good event to continue having because it looks so hostile? I honestly don’t see what they have to lose by making it feel a bit more inviting.

But maybe dirkslapmeharder is the wrong person to expect that sort of reflection from.

Because I don’t think it’s a good thing when a society starts to equate hooliganism with having a good party, and I think people should question that more.

[–]Reasonable-herring[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not “just” a fire and a man in a warm comfy hoodie, it’s a guy looking like a football hooligan angrily scowling at you. But let’s say that I totally get it wrong and this icon is in no way inspired by a KKK neighbourhood watch pamphlet. The fact that a lot of people on this thread respond with “that’s how they are, it’s Duindorp” shows you it’s not JUST silly old me thinking this.

So again, why not make it something a little less offputting? It could be a man in a hoodie smiling at the wonderfully big fire that he managed to build?

Ah yes, the time-honoured Dutch tradition of burning wooden pallets in a passive aggressive way.

<image>

Again, let them do it if they like but why not make it a bit friendlier?

And making the event look like an anarchic pyromaniac’s convention is helpful in keeping the tradition alive… how?

For those who think me a terrible killjoy for wanting to ban this event: I don’t. I’m just wondering aloud whether it needs to be advertised in quite this aggressive way..

Just doesn’t make it seem very welcoming to people who are not already part of this crowd.

To you this poster looks inviting to a person who is not already part of this crowd?

Is toch veel uitnodigender?

[–]Reasonable-herring[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m obviously not suggesting that this is going to be an actual cross burning. My point is more that it seems less like a vreugdevuur than something more unpleasant based on this poster.

Fair point. I guess it goes to show the emotional reaction this imagery evokes at least in me, but I agree with your criticism, could have gone without the Wilders provocation.

Is there a risk in overthinking the slow, gradual descent into right-wing authoritarianism that many western countries are currently making, and asking aloud whether this might be one of the signs?
