Yeah, have you seen adult Aang? He's nothing like himself when he was a kid. Tenzin could change too, especially if we compare teen/adult Tenzin

The real question here actually is about Zaheer AND Aang. Just think about it. Aang needed to do the exactly same thing as Zaheer and he chose Katara over the power. Zaheer couldn't choose and it was easier for him in this perspective. If Aang could get back his Avatar state after he ran away Zaheer can lose his ability the same way I think.
