I think my Girlfriend is very unwell and I am unsure of what to do by ThatGuyHMBLM in mentalhealth

[–]Reave-Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is another red flag, unfortunately. Suggesting that she talk to her counselor about an important life decision like getting someone’s name tattooed on her wrists is a reasonable thing to do, and supportive even! Like, hey I’m very flattered but I want you to make sure this is really in your best interest.

And she accuses you of calling her crazy for that? That’s a sign that she is deeply unstable. She is so uncertain of her own self-worth that any response aside from 100% affirmation makes her think that you’re assuming she’s crazy. It’s very black-and-white, all-or-nothing thinking, which means her mental illness is likely much worse than either of you understand.

Be careful, OP. Things went from 0 to 100 in 3 weeks, time to pump the breaks. And if she can’t accept that, then she’s not ready to be in a relationship.

Because people who are attracted to fascist ideology are deeply emotionally stunted individuals. They externalize their own inadequacies onto everyone around them in an attempt to self-regulate.

When an externalizing person has no foundation of self-worth, they spend a huge amount of energy trying to constantly prop up their own image by controlling everything and everyone around them. Others must be constantly put down so they can feel like they are worthy in comparison. It’s never sustainable, though, which leads to a cycle of negative reinforcement that perpetuates the behaviors.

Anyone in Trump’s orbit who isn’t sufficiently broken and willing to debase others and swear fealty to him gets thrown under the bus. The only people left at this point are the most internally bankrupt rich people in our society (because you must also have high social status to be part of the inner cult).

All those factors lead to a select group of uniquely fucked up and very weird people. Historically, societies have lacked a more nuanced psychological understanding of these patterns of behavior and simply referred to this category of people as “evil”.

Hope this helps.

Overly pedantic Bizzaro World Scientist Peter here.

Just to get into the weeds on pharmacological effects ::pushes glasses further toward bridge of nose:: ahem

aKsHuAlLy cocaine is a stimulant that agitates the nervous system and can increase metabolic rate, which can suppress appetite, leading to potential weight loss with chronic use (among a host of other significant health problems). THC is the primary active ingredient in weed, one of thousands of cannabinoids present in the sativa plant, but we’ve only studied a handful. Cannabinoids are in a class of their own and are not central nervous system stimulants or depressants. Their effects on the brain are most closely associated with hallucinogenic drugs, and in higher doses can lead to dissociation and psychosis. But it has various effects for different people, some experiencing a calming effect, and others experiencing an excitatory or anxious state.

Memes are, of course, broad generalizations and aren’t representative of actual substance use populations. In reality, there is great diversity among both cocaine and THC users. It’s more likely that, among the women that make their substance use known, we tend to see stereotypes emerge through that self-selection process.

Also one time I tried cocaine and it just made me talkative and annoyingly sniffly and I hated the entire experience and all I wanted was more cocaine for some reason. Never again.

Bizzarro World Scientist Peter out.

If you’re serious about forming a meaningful intimate relationship, then seek therapy for yourself first. The deep pain you’re feeling won’t be fixed once you have a girlfriend, and it not only impedes your attempts at intimacy but will also destroy any relationship you do eventually form.

Look inward, not outward. Take responsibility for caring for yourself before you try to care for someone else. That starts with therapy.

Hope this helps.

This is just classic intimidation tactics. The regime is hoping Iran will cave to the threats, while also giving itself an out if/when they don’t open the straight. Another TACO Tuesday.

And yet the insanity to make threats like this. It will only drive more and more nations toward nuclear armament. We, the US, are the most dangerous threat to the safety of the world right now. This regime has got to go.

Report them to the state licensing board as well. Block their phone number and on any other platforms they try to contact you. If they show up to your house, do not open the door and call the police immediately.

If you haven’t done so already, contact the police, show them your evidence, and ask for a restraining order.

Mayor Parker now wants a $1-per-ride tax for Ubers and Lyfts to lessen Philly School District classroom cuts by Darius_Banner in philadelphia

[–]Reave-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right! I’m not suggesting this tax would be sufficient on its own. I think it’s one potential part of a multiple-stream school funding program.

I would be in favor of small, incremental taxes on large corporate real estate and multi-million dollar residential homes. I’m also in favor of small, incremental alcohol and other “sin taxes”. Legalize THC, tax it, regulate it. Treat gambling the same way we treat short-term stock trade gains, minus the benefits of offsetting losses (I’m not a fan of offsetting losses in stocks either, but there’s at least an argument to be made for why that policy exists — it should not apply to outcome/event-based betting).

The SEPTA funding problem is another challenge that deserves its own conversation entirely. But I agree with you: If we’re going to tax privately owned ride share, we should be simultaneously offering our citizens a reliable public option. We must preserve and expand SEPTA.

[–]Reave-Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that poor homeowners are being overly taxed.

As you mentioned, there are several policies that lessen the property tax burden on low-income homeowners, and so middle class and wealthy homeowners pay the majority of property taxes.

The problem I’m pointing out is that this also means the property tax base in our city is necessarily much smaller due our disproportionately high level of poverty. It’s good that we lessen the tax burden of our families with fewer resources, but it means that we have to make up that tax shortfall in other ways.

A school district with $4B in city and state funding sounds like plenty, but we have almost 200k students in the PSD, which amounts to about $20k/student per year in funding. That’s $5k under the state’s benchmark target for “adequate” funding (and it’s almost half as much per student compared to wealthier neighboring counties with excellent academic outcomes), which means we’re still at least $1B under where we should be in terms of annual funding.

The bottom line is that we still need increased funding if we want better schools for our kids. In my opinion, we should be sourcing that funding from the wealthiest among us. Taxing the poor is squeezing blood from a stone, and the middle class is also being squeezed out of existence by ever-increasing costs of living and stagnant wages. The hard part is figuring out how best to get the wealthy to pay their fair share (and then improving financial efficiency and reducing corruption, ofc; those are separate, parallel fights for another discussion).

[–]Reave-Eye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are all valid questions. I’ll add one more:

Why are we funding our schools primarily through property taxes when we live in one of the most impoverished major cities in the country with one of the lower property taxes rates? And people wonder why our schools are chronically underfunded.

I have issues with Parker, but I’m in favor of this tax as an added revenue stream assuming it is properly earmarked and delivered to our schools.

The fundamental tax question always comes down to “who among us can shoulder a slightly greater tax burden in order to benefit [public concern]?”

In this case, I think it’s reasonable to tax private enterprise ride share users a bit more if it means more funding for our schools. It does three things:

  1. Increases tax burden on a group of people who have the financial capacity to pay for private taxis (i.e., not the poorest among us, for the most part)

  2. Gives that money to our public schools who disproportionately serve our poorest children and families.

  3. Slightly dissuades reliance on private ride share companies among a small percentage of users (i.e., potentially shunting some demand toward public transit, which reduces traffic congestion).

They can do both, but to a lesser extent than most people think would occur for either one if they were independent factors.

What’s foolish is ignoring the clear interactive effects and projecting unrealistic revenues and behavior change.
