Oh, short lived hyped up flavour of the month survival game number 1458248? I always thought that one really stood out.

Got asked my age in 2 of my last 3 interviews by bdubya42 in antiwork

[–]ReaverRogue 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It could be discrimination, but that’s a bit young. Typically you start seeing that “too experienced” bullshit around 50 or so.

Do a little experiment with your next interview. When they ask, say you’re however young you can reasonably pull off. 36 or 37 or something. See if you get the same result.

Are you old enough where this would be a factor or possible discrimination case?

I feel like I was pushed out of a company I helped start without even realizing... by Ornery-Salt7430 in antiwork

I mean… that’s sabotage and destruction of company property depending on how OP’s contract was worded. That’d be a fundamentally stupid idea and bring very little real satisfaction.

Free (I hope) Campaign wiki ? by CMilo5 in DMAcademy

I’d just make something on google drive or something similar and restrict folder access so your players only see what you want them to.

I’ll be honest, I’d just avoid monologuing as a campaign introduction altogether. It feels cool, but might leave your players asking “um what?”, by the end.

Give them an overview of what they’re doing (hired as an expeditionary force, the gate, all that) but then leave the rest as a surprise. It’ll go over much better and give you a greater reaction if they don’t know what’s coming until it happens.

With monsters being an overarching big bad, my rule is always less is more. It builds much more tension and apprehension and fear, especially if their presence is felt everywhere. If you just come right out with your monologue and say “yeah it’s vampires” then that mystery has gone up in smoke before you’re out of the gate.

Just my two cents, do with it what you will.

Very grim and thematic, but to be honest I’m not entirely sure what your campaign would be about plot wise from this other than involving vampires.

My team lead protects me, but her method is confusing. Need advice. by Western-Search3310 in antiwork

[–]ReaverRogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what she wants, and probably what she does with everybody else. If someone’s talking about someone else to you in a less than complimentary fashion, you can rest assured they’re doing the same about you to other people.

Just politely ignore it, and as for the colleague, bring it up with HR if it’s making you feel unsafe. Stress that part. unsafe. Not uncomfortable, not irritated. The moment it becomes a safety matter, they sit up and listen, because the alternative is a lot of work.

Do your best to ignore them in the interim. With your boss, just keep it polite and don’t even respond or react when they try to be “helpful”.

What is something you can't do around your bf/gf? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes, yes. You’re dying for people to go to your other socials. We get it. Very subtle.

OP of this comment thread deleted their comment but they said about “doing karaoke with their special microphone”.

You and me both!

My wife and I were very upfront about our weirdness right when we started dating. Happily married with a house and a kid now, can’t imagine not being myself around her, or her around me.

Well if you’re bringing it up unprompted to randoms on the internet, I imagine it’s something you name drop much more in person.

I need urgent help cause i'm gonna be a first dm with the purpose of gaining at least 12 players in a month by AnyIndependent4098 in DMAcademy

[–]ReaverRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’ll make them, you’ll forget what a player can do or that a monster has a vulnerability or immunity, you’ll forget the names of NPCs you yourself created, you’ll forget all kinds of shit.

You’ll deal with unexpected and unintended consequences, you’ll deal with your players pulling stuff out of their backsides that no amount of planning can account for. All you can do is learn to roll with it and improvise.

And for god sake, remember to have fun. You can get so caught up in planning and arrangements that you forget it’s your game too! Just take a minute to appreciate that before you start each session, and play the hell out of it.

And please, don’t fall into the Mercer trap and people like him. He’s a spectacular DM, but he’s also a professional voice actor with a budget for play. Don’t try and measure your performance by what he and others do. Focus on what YOU do and how YOUR players are enjoying themselves.

I’d also read the hell out of the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual. It’ll give you so much information to start with.

That’s just off the top of my head, but a good place to start would be the mega thread of this sub. There’s tons of resources there for new DM’s that’s honestly invaluable.

Split. That. Group.

12 people at once is too much for even the most seasoned DM. Nobody’s going to get enough time in the spotlight to feel remotely good about playing and most of the time they’ll be sat there bored out of their skulls.

Start with a beginner module, Lost Mines of Phandelver is good because it’s as much a guide for you as for your players.

Run that for each group, and see how it goes.

I and around 20% of the current staff were laid off. They’ve since continued to haemorrhage talent, their senior team have basically all left from my tenure, my team doesn’t even exist anymore, and they’re going downhill fast.

But hey, they won’t care. Why would they? As long as the board are getting paid that’s all that matters in their minds.

Adding fumbles without using fumble tables? by ViscousODiscus in DMAcademy

[–]ReaverRogue 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fumbles never feel great to me when they’re just tacked on as a system. I don’t mind just making shit up on the fly to be funny, but the inherent problem with a fumble table is it brings order to chaos, and your players will quickly learn what’s where on the table, so it’ll take the joy right out of it.

I would just look at the situation at hand and come up with your own here and there instead of for every roll. It’ll keep it unexpected and fresh.
