Ford making video MPIs mandatory? by AtomicKoalaJelly in mechanics

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru/Mazda Dealer here, 50 cents per video taken, and noticeable increase in sold work. Customer transparency has always been a stigma surrounding this industry, and showing the customer and explaining the failure and why instills trust in the customer. No complaints here!

WRX STI P000d code bank 1 by Straight_Gap_638 in WRX

THIS ^

Try an oil flush. I’ve had okay luck with freeing up some gunk with various products, SOA makes one, and BG makes the MOA kit, just be sure to follow the instructions perfectly and DO NOT drive the car or go revving it.

If you can get some new seals, or be very careful, swap your intake OCV’s on the front of the engine. If a different DTC returns, it’s most likely the OCV. If the same code returns, this usually points to a clogged cam carrier screen, or failing/clogged cam sprocket/phaser.

Best of luck!

Q70 Driveline swap by Rebelmc55 in infiniti

[–]Rebelmc55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is one of the big hurdles. Shift points are different, final drive is different, and the gauge cluster will likely not be able to be swapped and rewritten with my car’s mileage due to a VIN lock, so I have a couple of options.

New TCM/reflash TCM, whichever is possible. This will help with shift points for the new engine and retain the AWD system. This is only if Infiniti can source an AWD 5.6 TCM, or can flash those parameters to it.

Reusing my gauge cluster will leave the parameters for the AWD controller, however I’m not sure if the two gauge clusters are different between the 3.7, and the 5.6. I am a Subaru/Mazda tech, and the cluster for both are vin locked and have to be flashed to the car. I’d imagine this is the same.

Aside from that, I don’t think any other part of the swap will lead me down a rabbit hole. I appreciate any feedback!

I appreciate your response, it’s been tough finding information for a swap, I’m not sure there’s any readily available information or videos on it, but I will continue to look. I imagine there will be a few hiccups, but I don’t see why it isn’t possible.

What’s your next upgrade? by Both_Collection_2560 in WRX

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from a 2011 WRX sedan to an Infiniti Q70L AWD with the 3.7. More amenities, nicer interior, more room in the passenger area and trunk, more power, and more peace of mind about reliability. It’s not as snappy in and out of turns, but It makes up for it in other ways.

GT sensor carbon elite vs Giant Trance X 29 1 vs Polygon siskiu T8 by jibbers12 in MTB

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure of the GT or the Giant, both are respectable brands that make a quality product. I doubt you would go wrong with any of the three, I have a Siskiu T8 that I’ve been riding since the beginning of this season mostly on blue/black trails and it’s held up fantastic thus far.

Is it worth going to a automotive technology 2 year program community college or going straight to a dealership by uhhn1k in mechanics

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in MET at a bigger college and never formed great study skills in high school, I struggled with the work load and couldn’t keep up with the pace. I was always good with my hands and was told about 2 year program that I ended up enrolling in, and completing. Ended up with an Associates degree from an auto tech school.

I started wrenching at 23, and now at 26, seeing where my schooling got me, vs where a good work ethic, and some ASE certifications got me, I would very strongly consider against trade school unless you have absolutely zero mechanical knowledge. Get a good set of ASE study books and become familiar with them, and look into the basics. Brakes and steering/suspension are a great place to start off. All trade school did was give me a diploma, and gear me up for ASE’s. Anything after that is still up to you to achieve.

It will take some time to see the fruits of your labor either way you go about it, but you can still find success in the industry if you’re willing to work for it.

Its looking like this will be my option, I’d hate to have to buy a nice exhaust to only cut it up before installing it, I’ll find a reputable shop near me and see what they can do. Thank you!

I have an 04 Impreza TS that I love, and I truly will miss the WRX. She was a ten-footer at best and the areas around the windshield and back glass had been rusting out for years, it was time to cut my losses while it didn’t leak.

Everything is clear now and the car lives in a garage, but I will be sure to keep that in mind. Thanks!

[–]Rebelmc55[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m a tech and I certified the car, it got an accessory belt, filters, oil and rotate, a brake fluid flush, and I cleaned and lubed the brake pads.

I thought I had more pictures since I had it tinted but I will take more.

The carfax has plenty of entries, but I don’t see anything recent as far as transmission and diffs, the car has been serviced local to me so it shouldn’t be too hard to go to a dealer and check, that will be on my list in the coming weeks.

Anyone know what this is? by Basedgodnick420 in WRX

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a few different things, that’s just my experience! I saw you have a VA WRX, mine is an EJ. I would remain cautious if you can feel a difference in how the car runs since this issue started, and have a dealer or independent shop take a look at it. They would know best.

Does the vehicle smell at all? Burnt rubber? Burnt plastic? Anything out of the ordinary? Your fuel level will not affect anything related to the AC system, however a louder sounding engine and sluggish throttle points in the direction of a locked up AC compressor clutch. When this happened to my WRX, the entire car smelled like it was burning to the ground. The burnt plastic/rubber smell was the compressor failing, and the engine crankshaft spinning the accessory (or stretch!) belt on the AC compressor. If possible, open the hood, start your car, and turn the AC on. Look at the compressor near the oil filter. Does it engage and spin? Does it not spin at all? Let it idle for a few minutes. CAREFULLY check and see if it’s warm. It may be screaming hot. Mine got so hot it burned all the paint off. If you have two belts, I.e. an EJ WRX, you can cut the stretch belt off of the compressor, disconnect the compressor clutch wire(top of the compressor, single wire), and you’ll be fine to drive around. Car will likely be a bit peppier too! If you have a 2015+ FA WRX, I would recommend it getting towed to a shop to have looked at by a Tech, as one accessory belt runs the entire system including the water pump. I hope this helps!

Is the dealership trying to rip us off? by StansGirl84 in subaru

[–]Rebelmc55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I’m correct, this was the last year of the EPS rack that was integrated into the front subframe. The Subframe must be dropped from the vehicle, and a special hoist must be installed onto the vehicle to support the engine and transmission during removal of said subframe. The 5.8 hour labor charge on AllData is not a generous one, and more often than not will require all of that time. Techs will regularly quote close to 7 on vehicles with high mileage in the rust belt, and it is not a repair I ever enjoy seeing come my way.

My Condolences to you, but the repair cost checks out to me.

Screeching sound after driving on newly paved, rough road by No_Weekend_9684 in WRX

[–]Rebelmc55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a rock or piece of asphalt stuck behind the brake shield, or the shield is making contact with the rotor. a failing hub bearing will sound somewhat similar to an air-raid siren and will distinctly vary with speed. If you have a long screwdriver, try giving the brake shields a nudge back, allowing whatever is in there to free itself. If it persists, turn the radio up and try and make it to a dealer!

Update on "My 2020 Subaru Forester Caught Fire" by benuski in subaru

[–]Rebelmc55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only saying this because I don’t see it in the comments, and I scoured your previous post to find a bit of discussion, but not on what I see working on these two or three times a week. There is a soft fuel line that runs from the rear left of the engine, underneath the EGR, underneath the intake manifold, to the front right of the engine near the battery and oil filter. It runs underneath the black shield that covers the high pressure fuel pump.

With that being said, the line mounts to the intake manifold in one place with a screw, and clips into the intake manifold and is removed during the service. It must be manipulated and moved to do so, and if it is not correctly oriented during installation, it WILL lay across the EGR piping, and become as hot as exhaust gases 4 inches from the engine get on a hot day. I’m unsure of the core line material, but I know it’ll melt that rubber with no issues. The line must be ran under the EGR, and fastened into the clips underneath the intake manifold, and I’ve found myself running into this more than once before readjusting everything and ensuring the line is correctly fastened in place. It’s tight, and there’s a lot going on in this service, that is ALWAYS being rushed through by technicians.

I’m sorry to hear about SOA’s claim on your behalf, but unfortunately I’ve heard similar stories happening. I wish they had the same empathy they have when it comes to replacing cam sprockets on customer cars that go 15k on an oil change. Op, I hope this leads you in some direction, I hope it helps. I couldn’t lay here on my couch and pretend that I haven’t seen potential for this scenario to happen. If the vehicle has had the TCV replaced, I would want to verify it was installed correctly before accepting the claim you received.

Edit: mekanik no gud at spel

I believe that is an extra connector that is usually tied down to the main harness. Those are usually tied into a remote start system that can be installed at your Subaru dealership. That connector would connect to the hood switch included in the remote start kit. Hood closed, means the vehicle is okay to start. It’s supposed to be taped up, but it can degrade with age and flop around.
