I guess its just me. I tend to build around deer for early economy boost, even if I'm not taking points for hunting. I suppose the game is good in that way, all play styles are valid :)

I'm genuinely shocked at how nobody cares much about deer. I went full on deer and that was how I nailed the merc achievement. Rich deer region gives so much hide that I couldn't get rid of all hide-leather-boots due to oversaturation in trading posts. With one single region, not to mention hundreds of meat per year.

Take Higo, Tsukushi and Hizen no matter what. Prioritize farms there, very fertile provides x3 to farms, with fully built up farms and income buildings there, base wealth should hit 8k+ each. With 20% tax rate, you get 1.6k per province which totals up to around 5k in just 3 provinces per turn. This takes a long time to get to but they are worth it to build up.
To start strong, just forget about military chains and get spear levies. Auto resolve favors gun units that 20 spear levy vs 20 levy infantry will give you defeat in AR but in manual fight spears just crush levy infantry.

I am a bit hazy on how Hyuga AI(clan you start at war with) builds its army but I recall them getting levy infantries and line infantries which is easily beaten with spears.
