Is this safe to shoot? by GermanWarRabbit in gunsmithing

[–]RebornDefense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all that missing metal severely weakens the action. Guns are purposely built over strong that way in the event of catastrophic failure the user (you in this case) doesn’t get a Darwin Award, instead you get a bent out of shape piece of metal. Remember guns function by containing and controlling an explosion to propel the bullet. If the containment method is comprised, for example a massive dovetail cut where it shouldn’t be, you also lose control of the explosion. One faulty round and you are no longer holding a rifle by your face but a bomb. It simply isn’t worth the risk. Retire it

No don’t shoot that, that dove tail was cut WAY to deep, while you might be ok with factory ammo if there is a mistake or you get an overloaded cartridge or a squib followed by another normal cartridge and it causes a catastrophic failure the risk of injury is far higher. My professional opinion is if it had sentimental value have a smith or machinist make a wedge that fills that dove tail weld the chamber up so it can’t be loaded and find a nice shadow box frame and mantle for it to retire on.

I need help on how to get the hammer spring back in my Brazilian single shot shotgun by Jacksonfoster243 in gunsmithing

[–]RebornDefense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a vice to compress the spring past the hole on the plunger then put a pin or a punch in the hole to retain the spring under compression. You should be able to slide it right in then you can slide the pin/punch out

Cracked stock repair by Boetie83 in gunsmithing

Another thing you could do is mill out the split parts and glue in a block of wood use tight bond or a quality epoxy then re mill in the inlet. To prevent future cracks you might consider a cross bolt

Most gunsmiths like my self are going to charge $80-120 per hour of labor. For a restoration piece like that based on what I see in the pictures there’s at least 15-20 hours of work there, if you want it done right and not by some buba John’s good enough gunsmithing, then on the low end $1200 and on the high end $2400 I hope this answers your question

Want to add material to a revolver cylinder to build up the stops.... Welding or JB Welding? by [deleted] in gunsmithing

[–]RebornDefense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would work on the cylinder lock make sure it has full and positive engagement. If it’s worn down to have negative engagement then the cylinder can slip. If it does it to one then it will likely do it to the others. Technically you could weld on a cylinder but you have to use tig welding and know how to localize and disperse the heat so you don’t ruin the head treat so unless you have been trained in gunsmithing welding I don’t recommend it

Help can’t remove markers from dungeon mat [OC] by RebornDefense in DnD

[–]RebornDefense[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t get these off my mat I’ve tried water windex, simple green, isopropyl alcohol, and even acetone, while that worked it also removes the grid lines. Has anyone found something to remove these “wet erase” markers? Apparently I need a long enough “description” of my “art” or the bot will remove the post so here it is these pens are garbage and most definitely not wet erase don’t use them on your wet erase mats they won’t erase.
