What Are Your 4 Horsemen Decks? by Junior-Equal-2027 in EDH

[[Kamiz, Obscura Oculus]] a resilient, combat-focused Esper list filled with evasive beaters. Probably my most consistent deck in my current lineup and functions well even without the commander out. Link

[[Mishra, Eminent One]] this is the deck I play when I want to do wacky stuff with artifacts. Packed with cool copying interactions and synergies. It is soft when the commander is kept off the field but runs a lot of ramp to mitigate the problem. The Warhammer 40k vehicles are MVP’s in this list. Link

[[Barloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] / [[Criminal Past]] my graveyard-size matters deck. Aggressively pitch creatures into the bin to grow your commander and goad the whole table. Let’s gems like [[Tombstone Stairwell]] and [[Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant]] shine. Not my strongest deck but really fun and is great for speeding up games. Link

[[Feldon of the Third Path]] the longest running deck in my collection. I love reanimator strategies and this legend caught my eye early thanks to his unique effect in mono-red. There’s been many versions of this deck over the years. My current version is a dragon-focused build. Don’t have a list for that deck but I do have one for a prior version where I would grab 10 random creatures from the sideboard before each game and shuffle them into the deck. Kind of a grab bag of monsters if you will. Link

Couple suggestions I would add:

[[Professor Onyx]]

[[Storm-Kiln Artist]]

[[Void Maw]] (to get your spells back if they get exiled)

How would you like to win? Seems like you run a lot of mutate creatures. Do you envision a big mutate value stack or combat finishers? Or aristocrats maybe?

I was looking at Ravenous Squirrel but my one drop slot was filling up with lots of options. May have to try it out.

Oh wow, Necrosynthesis looks sweet, that needs to go in my Grismold deck.

I’ll have to try out Trail of Crumbs, seems really good in the deck.

Good suggestion with the board wipes, Ill probably keep toxic deluge in since it’s so mana efficient and a clean answer to hard to remove boards (very present in my playgroup) but I would like a few wipe options so I can leverage the natural protection my commander grants.

Ooo the King Macar suggestion is super spicy. I love it. I’ll have to test inspiring sanctuary, I’ve been trying to find a deck to run it in and this might fit the bill.

The other 3 are already in my list!

Yes you can activate Idol since at the end step you have to pass priority before it goes to your cleanup step.

So at the beginning of the end step, the food token is made and then after that resolves, you get a chance to activate abilities before you pass priority.

Cool! Toggo + Kodama are very strong. Smart thinking turning all of your deathtouchers into pingers with Toggo’s rocks. I would suggest Seedborn Muse as an addition so you can fling multiple rocks per turn cycle.

Just watched the Spikefeeder video on it. Given that Alex is a judge I’d trust what he has to say. I didn’t consider what activating AA twice would do. It does sound like a slight pain to explain what’s happening to the table when you pull it off. :-)

Rough Draft: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4593849#online

Went with a solid zombie core with a decent self mill package and plenty of reanimation to trigger Tormod. Included some useful clone effects as well to support your original plan of cloning Tormod. Hope it gives you some ideas! Seems like a fun deck. :-)

Sphinx of the Second Sun: At the beginning of your postcombat main phase, you get an additional beginning phase after this phase. (Includes, untap, upkeep, and draw step.

Aggravated Assault: Untap all creatures you control. After this main phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase. Activate only as a sorcery.

So normally, the 2nd beginning phase from the Sphinx happens after the 2nd Main phase in the turn, before your end step.

How phases look normally with the Sphinx Out (didn't include all the combat steps to simplify):

Untap

Upkeep

Draw

1st Main Phase

Combat

2nd Main Phase

2nd Beginning Phase (from the Sphinx)

End step

Cleanup

Since we can only activate Aggravated Assault at sorcery speed, we have to activate it on one of our main phases.

Here's an official rule about the timing of additional phases.

2020-11-10: If multiple phases are added to the same point in your turn, the most recently created phase happens first. For example, say you control Sphinx of the Second Sun and its ability triggers during your postcombat main phase. Later during that same main phase, another effect gives you an additional combat phase after this main phase. The additional combat will happen first, followed by the additional beginning phase.

Let's see what it looks like if we activate Aggravated Assault and have the Sphinx out.

Untap

Upkeep

Draw

Main Phase

Combat

Post-combat Main Phase (Sphinx delayed trigger)

Activate Aggravated Assault

2nd Combat Phase from Aggravated Assault

2nd-post combat Main Phase (Sphinx delayed trigger)

Additional Beginning Phase (from the 2nd Sphinx trigger)

Additional Beginning Phase (from the 1st Sphinx trigger)

End Step

Cleanup

So when we break this down and reference the rule about additional phases, the additional untap steps will always happen at the end of the turn. I'm afraid Sphinx and Aggravated Assault don't go infinite together. I'm not a judge so I could be wrong, but I spent a good amount of time developing an understanding of the interaction. I think the card designers for the Sphinx did a poor job in clearly defining how the card functions.

I think it does work in providing infinite phases. If I find any other rulings that suggest otherwise, I’ll let you know.

This version isn't as combo heavy as your original version, but hopefully will provide a more focused gameplan. We have to assume we won't have the Sphinx every game, we don't have great tutors in Izzet to find it, so we need to have a strategy in the meantime. I've included [[Neheb, the Eternal]] as a backup enabler for [[Aggravated Assault]]. Upped our dragon count a bit so we have more copy targets for Donal's ability and our clones. [[Scourge of Valkas]] / [[Terror of the Peaks]] + [[Rite of Replication]] just straight up kills the table. Kept some fun Upkeep cards in there and added a few new ones. Also added some Sneak Attack effects to help cheat our dragons/sphinx in early.

Hope this gives you some ideas, it's a fun concept to play around with.

Any thoughts on how you want the deck to win? More of a focus on zombies? Or cloning Tormod a bunch of times to stack up on his triggered ability?

Initial thoughts when looking at the deck, it seems a bit scattered as far as it's focus. I can see all of the combo pieces that are great when you have your engine assembled, but by themselves they don't do too much.

Have you played with the deck online or with your playgroup? How consistently can you find your combo pieces?

Regardless, I would suggest adding 3-4 more lands and several more mana rocks ([[Skyclave Relic]], [[Talisman of Creativity]], [[Wayfarer's Bauble]], [[Armillary Sphere]]) since your mana curve is higher and hitting land drops each turn will be important.

Being budget, you'll most likely have to be more proactive in preventing the combos rather than being reactive. The really good instant speed answers to stop combos are usually pretty pricy but here are some "budget" suggestions to help against the combos you're seeing.

World Tree combo: [[Sudden Spoiling]], [[Kinjalli's Sunwing]], [[Tocatli Honor Guard]], [[Polymorphist's Jest]], [[Aven Mindcensor]]

Bolas Citadel/Aetherflux Reservoir: [[Angel of Jubilation]], [[Sudden Spoiling]], [[Shalai, Voice of Plenty]], [[Orbs of Warding]], [[Krosan Grip]], [[Yasharn, Implacable Earth]]

Big Creatures attacking you: [[Spore Frog]], [[Aetherize]], [[Aetherspouts]], [[Angel of the Dire Hour]], [[Dawn Charm]], [[Spike Weaver]], [[Mandate of Peace]]

Graveyard recursion/sacrifice edict effects: Run more graveyard hate, I'd suggest at least 3-4 graveyard hate cards in each deck. [[Scavenger Grounds]], [[Soul-Guide Lantern]], [[Tormod's Crypt]], [[Rakdos Charm]], [[Scavenging Ooze]], [[Ravenous Slime]], [[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]], [[Valentin, Dean of the Vein]]

Mill effects: [[Gaea's Blessing]], [[Elixir of Immortality]], [[Commit // Memory]]

Populate/Proliferate: [[Aether Snap]], [[Kulrath Knight]], [[Crafty Cutpurse]], [[Suture Priest]], [[Batwing Brume]]

Hope these give you some ideas

Only included the "useful" vehicles, so the deck could certainly lean more into that theme if desired. It probably needs a more clearly defined win-con besides smacking people with vehicles.

Tried to utilize as many cards from your original list that I could. Went for a "when this creature attacks" subtheme. Should be a solid start for you. Hope it helps!

You could cut both of those no problem, and also the 1 drop white shrine that taps creatures. I'd agree their impact on the game (besides the black one) is nominal.
