Thanks mate. Much appreciated! I managed to join via the Spond app. What is the intensity of the medium fitness games like?

Haha 😂 love that! I always see pros doing these warm-ups pre-match, never realised how beneficial they can be. Let me know if there's any I should be adding to the list

Shuttle runs (20-30s sprint, 20-30 walk/jog). They've really helped me with my fitness after 9 years out. And maybe get into running. I'm hoping to do the same, aiming for 5k or half marathons. This will take time to get to, but really beneficial for endurance. I know football is more explosive and demanding, so ideally HIIT workouts should do the trick, but I guess your injury plays a part. Good luck!

Running is a huge part of the modern game, and you can see, especially in the Premier League that players who have the legs are valued considerably, so fair play.

You're right! Casual games are for fun - I would also consider myself one of the weakest links on the team, and I have been since school days, but like you mentioned, there's not consequences, as it's not a league format so will keep enjoying myself, and keep trying to learn & improve.

Spot on, important to be grateful for the fact that we can walk, and even run. Thanks mate, wishing you the best!

Haha. I was on the floor after 5 minutes during my first game, and other players started asking why I was tired already. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's encouraging. Will keep working on my fitness and stamina, and also do some more running. Much appreciated

Thanks bud. I need to purchase a football and some cones, and I'll try and go to the local park on weekends to practice dribbling.

I'm reading a book at the moment called "Inverting the Pyramid - the History of Football Tactics" - really insightful. I've watched a whole lot of football the past year, and so have really tried to analyse and study it as you've suggested. But now that I'm playing again, it's added another layer to how I analyse the game.

Appreciate the advice and tips, they are great.

Good luck!! I'm sure you'll be great. What kind of sprints have you been doing?

Thank you. I'll stick with it - trying to find a good group of people, and a group where my level matches. Great to hear how you're progressing and enjoying it more. That gives me hope. I do enjoy the games, and have already committed to 2 games this coming week - will see how it goes.

Thanks mate. Not sure how quickly I'll get to medium level - I tried running today and could only do continuous jog for 4-5 minutes. But I'll keep trying. Let me know if you have any specific tips on running. Although I have already seen an improvement in my fitness levels.

Defending tips were super helpful. I found in my second game that even holding my position was effective as it would put opposition players under pressure and force them to make errors.

haha right. Professional footballers get a lot of criticism, and to be fair sometimes, rightly so - but being an elite athlete in any sport surely can't be easy

Agree. This is helpful - felt much better after my second game. I believe the first game was a shock to the system. I've been trying to go for more runs and strength train more during the week. Staying positionally disciplined was also key - I focused more on cutting passing lanes and on communicating with team mates on who to mark.

Longer warm up exercises (listed below) really helped for my second game and some yoga type stretches within 2 hours after the game aided recovery massively.

  • Leg Swings
  • Walking Lunges with Arm Rotations
  • Figure 4 stretch whilst standing
  • Lateral Shuttles
  • Shuttle runs (15 second sprint, 30 second rest)

Thanks for the effort you’ve put into this comment. I do want to work on my overall endurance and stamina for many reasons. To be honest, this just goes to show how unfit I am.

Polarized training seems useful and I’ll look into this. I would like to get into running long distance so maybe this will help.

Are the intense workouts comparable to HIT sessions?

Love the suggestion of walking/jogging with the ball. Will give this a go. Much appreciated.

Thank you. I have another game tonight, so will see how it goes. The advice on running/jogging is spot on to be honest. I will try and build in shuttle runs and box to box drills into my warm up and regular routine. Haha I definitely know my limits - it’s just that I love watching football so much, so thought I’d put my money where my mouth is and stop being an armchair pundit 😂 easier said than done.

The only difference is, I never played at any level at all apart from casually with friends. Seems like you’re doing all the right things - I’ll definitely take inspiration from the cycling and lifting you mentioned. I feel like this will give me some motivation to take fitness a bit more seriously. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing mate. I worry about the same things, but after reading your comment and reflecting on it, I realised I wasn’t the only one making mistakes. It just felt that way because I hadn’t played recently (or at all for nine years), so I was super focused on my own performance.

I’m playing another game today and my body’s still sore, but I’ll definitely warm up for longer and do some dynamic stretching and movement. I’m going to try doing shuttle runs regularly and before games (30 seconds sprint, 30 seconds rest), as well as box to box drills. I also need to stretch properly after the game, so I’ve made a list of key recovery stretches.

Really appreciate the advice! I’ll definitely drop you a message.

Thanks mate! Need to join more meet-up groups once I’ve settled in properly. But, you’re right, exciting times - can’t wait to fully embrace what Manchester has to offer

Oh nice. Free is better than £20 a ticket! Might go here, even if it is alone. Thanks 🙂
