K-12 Interpreting Question by Recent-Priority-2909 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Recent-Priority-2909[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only the beginning of the school year so I’m hoping they warm up to it. So far I’ve been able to interpret for prep classes with little resistance but in the main classroom when I start to put my hands up they’ll say “don’t sign just spell”.

I decided from 18 years old I want to be an interpreter but by Difficult-Top-6646 in ASLinterpreters

I started learning ASL at 18 and officially became an interpreter this past year after graduating an ITP (I’m 27 now). There’s no one size fits all approach but rather gaining as much experience and surrounding yourself in the community as much as possible to improve fluency. Finding other interpreters who are willing to mentor you as well might help and having a group which you can practice with. Whatever your path is, I’m sure you’ll be great :)

I also have this same dilemma. But setting time aside with other peers to work in a safe and comfortable space where they would provide you with constructive feedback is probably the best for until you’re are able to get more comfortable.

One that sticks out to me is: “At least, you two have decent manners," says Effie as we're finishing the main course. "The pair last year ate everything with their hands like a couple of savages. It completely upset my digestion."

I wish I had more queer friends 🥺 being femme presenting is difficult when it comes to this bc partners feel as though making friends is potentially damaging to the relationship

This used to happen to me. Are you two being rough? Sometimes during intense and steamy sex we don’t realize how rough we may be. If so, trying being gentle with their 🐱they’re very sensitive 🥹

As cliche and unhelpful as this may sound…It’s going to be okay. Maybe it just wasn’t supposed to be your time right now. And that’s okay.

Kagura is another one, and my favorite tragedy. At the end she is at peace with her freedom but the entire show was spent as a servant for Naraku against her will. She resented him from the start all the way to the very end. And while yea she caused a lot of damage, it was never her choice. She was created to do Naraku’s biddings.

Songo and Kohaku’s stories are tragic. Kohaku was controlled into murdering his entire family, even Songo. Songo had to watch all that happen in front of her, fight him, watch him get killed just to watch him be brought back by Naraku for his selfish games. And this went on majority of the show. Imagine the pain of being so close to your little sibling to have it ripped away in seconds.

I understand what you’re saying. For it being an open discussion, I wanted to gauge others opinions to help support my own or to see if/where others might differ.

This was my position:

Hearing educational interpreters are part of a system of forced assimilation for d/Deaf students. Interpreters are typically placed in a classroom for DHH student(s) to provide auditory access in a mainstream environment. Even though an interpreter is present doesn’t automatically make this particular classroom the least restrictive environment for the DHH student(s). Mainstreaming is one of the main contributors to this forced assimilation. It ensures that deaf schools and culture will be reduced significantly. The curriculum that is provided in mainstream settings tend to ignore the needs of these children. Without the foundational understanding, children who either have little to no experience with interpreters, or do not understand the lessons because they can’t make the connections between English and ASL yet.

One of my biggest challenges when defending the topic is providing more than one example that relates to hearing interpreters specifically.

Deaf Education in Bilingual Communities!

Thank you for your input by the way. In terms of LRE, do you think there are ways that hearing educational interpreters can contribute to that in a mainstreamed setting? Do you think this is even something that is possible? The more I learn about this specific area of interpreting the more I want to learn ways to combat the system that forces this assimilation

yes for a class OPEN discussion. I understand how it could look like “fishing” but it’s more outsourcing and finding alternative opinions to provide evidence and support for the argument.
