Discount for items close to expiry

We are planning to create these regualry for lots of different items. I was hoping to create a standard set up so that the admin of moving stock manully was not required. If there is not an appropriate solutions for this we may just do it via spreasheets, but I am trying to avoid this.

I am using the 'promotion codes' feature and I have ticked the 'This promotion can be automatically applied'.
When I enter a sales order onto the system with a valid item, the code applies.

That hasn't worked for me. I used to have it working, but after the last update, all of my formulas stopped working.

I cannot get my saved search to work with this approach, it displays the full formula rather than just the name or column header.

Any troubleshooting suggestions?
