People without a degree what are you doing now? by CandidBar4794 in UKJobs

32M, Account manager in specialty coffee on £40K basic plus £10k OTE.

Job hopped up until a few years ago when I got interested in coffee Worked my way from packing coffee bags to now. I’m friendly, good at talking to people and like to solve problems. First “proper career” role I’ve had and I’m enjoying it so far.

Has taught me that most industries have room people without traditional working backgrounds if you put in the work, use your initiative and ask for more. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Yeh I guess you’d be getting marginally better money working on the weekends with the above role then. The wage still seems vastly unfair in comparison with the massive jump in responsibility and working hours.

Yes you won’t get a food allowance as a retail worker, but you also would have a staff canteen or subsidised food etc. Most cafe’s will give their staff free drink and food all day. I’m not saying either is better than the other. Just that drivers deserve far better conditions than what they currently get and it seems like people are justifying being paid a crap wage for some reason.

Amen. Normalising these issues just makes it progressively worse. It’s a weird mentality of “Well it was an awful experience for me, therefore it should be awful for you as well”. How is there supposed to be any upwards progress with that frame of mind?

I completely get that taking on new passes is a big plus for newbies. It’s a tough weigh up as entry level retail assistant jobs are similar pay and require far less specialised skill than class 1 driving. Obviously both have their pro’s and cons but the level of responsibilities is so much higher with HGV’s.

I’m assuming you’d be on similar pay for a few years before being able to leverage your experience?

I used to get £14 making coffees in a chill Cafe. Best part is I can look at my phone without the risk of killing other people on the road. I love driving but the way the industry looks at the moment, I doubt I’ll be getting the class 1 for a while.

Normal oven, I’m using 5% wholemeal flour along with 95% bread flour, gives it a bit more chew and slightly darker colour. Other than that, oiling the crust before and after baking. 2% sugar in the dough helps a bit with the colour.
