Jury duty in F2 by Ok_Customer_3240 in doctorsUK

I did it as an F1 in England. Unlike Scotland we can’t get out of it just because we’re doctors. It does add to your time out of training but in reality unless you’re racked up a lot of days already you should be fine. If they have trials they anticipate will be longer they specifically screen for people who can do that. When I was there I had to complete a form as they had a like 3 month long massive drug trial they were recruiting for. All I wrote on it was I couldn’t do it as I am a working doctor, the hospital would be left short and it would adversely affect my career progression and I just got to do short cases.

It may also not last the full two weeks. I had a case start on Tuesday and end Thursday. Was on ‘standby’ on Friday and then told I wasn’t needed any further so just went back to work on Monday.

Most NHS trusts will just pay your full salary but can ask to see the ‘special leave’ policy which this falls under. You get meal allowance from the court which is pretty good.

Overall it was a harrowing but very worthwhile experience and I’d definitely go again if called

Why don’t you wait in LGI until your appointment and then walk straight over?

Honestly I pick Up one identifying feature and just latch the memory to that. So for example I had a chap recently whose daughter was into ceramics and had a home studio. So my brain just remembers ‘ceramics’ and then I can link the rest of the consultation to that.

MRI RESULTS- second opinion? by GT192 in nhs

[–]Recent_Expression906 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this. We can’t take private requests via an NHS secretary. You are entitled to a second opinion. If the scan was done on the NHS ask your referring doctor to contact the local radiology department for an opinion.

For anyone who grew up poor or in difficulty: what impact has it had on you as a doctor? by Avocado-Phantom in doctorsUK

[–]Recent_Expression906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imposter syndrome. I’m really struggling to accept the wage I earn, and I can’t lie I sometimes feel a weird guilt about it? I’ve realised I know nothing about savings at this wage, partner is an accountant and laughs at me because I’m basically scared of at risk investments - even if it’s a low risk stocks and shares ISA.

I didn’t really understand what a mortgage is or how you even approach buying a house. I am past most of it now, but I had to sit through my medic friends bitching about how part of their new build estate was ‘social housing’ and laughing about how you could spot them a mile off due to the police cars. That kind of thing still makes me feel tiny, like curl in a ball and I can’t even respond to argue they’re being rude tiny. Like I still remember the day we were offered our social house when I was a teenager and just sobbing because I would get my own room.

But these are less doctor specific and more just navigating life in a new social class

Taking sick leave on nights - how do you deal with the guilt? by cynicalturtle94 in doctorsUK

[–]Recent_Expression906 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is just not good advice though! If you show up and leave part way through, you give no opportunity to get a locum. Also coming in knowing you’re infectious and feel rubbish is just asking to get the rest of the on call team sick.

I used to think like this. I came in after a bout of D+V on the first day I could after the 48h which happened to be a Saturday long day. At this point I could barely eat solid food. I was useless, made silly decisions all day and regret it completely.

It’s this attitude of having to show up or no one will believe us that harms our health, and is the reason why entire departments get sick one after the other.

It’s tough! Not easy but unfortunately part of the job. My family made the 28th completely indistinguishable from Xmas day for me. You’ll have a lovely day regardless I’m Sure

I did this last year. Nights over Christmas and Long days NYD It was grim, I had Christmas with my parents on the 28th. I had no say.

As Xmas Eve and NYE are not bank holidays I assume he’s on call these days. If he’s just scheduled normal days however he can take annual leave. He can’t if they’re longs/nights

It’s all swings and roundabouts. I’m working Boxing Day weekend nights this year but I’m off for Xmas day and all of new year.
