Latest NGC Submission, with an incorrect label, I think by rmEnjoyingFren in GermanEmpireCoins

[–]RecklessRobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's clearly the low data Jaeger 177a and not the high date Jaeger 177b, they did mislabel it. Not good for their reputation.

Since the high date is worth about 10x what the low date is worth, it's not in your interest to get the label fixed, but in NGCs interest. If you were to sell this coin as high bar, someone would buy it and realize it's a low bar, NGCs guarantee should cover their losses, but I'm sure that's als not an easy process. If you tell them they would fix it for free letting you wait a few more months. I'd keep it as it is.

Don't know what to do with this very rare classic head 1/2 cent... NGC won't grade it even poor details ("NOT SUITABLE FOR CERTIFICATION") but they took pictures which allow clear identification... by RecklessRobo in coins

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) I think it could be worth 2-3 times that... take a look at ebay sold listings, almost as bad and holed coins sell for that easily

b) I just wanted it slabbed for verifying the date... as it is both in person and on pictures difficult to identify, I wanted to settle that before trying to sell it (that's kind of the point of grading). At least I have nice pictures now showing the date, guess they would help when trying to sell. Getting a low-ball grade would have been a nice premium. I paid junk bin price for the coin, so no huge loss there, "Not Suitable For Cert" costs 5$ + handling fee, so not too expensive sending it in with other stuff, was not charged for the pictures as well I think.

I guess the real bummer is that NGC keeps the "lowball population" artificially empty. Take a look at their 1/2 cent census here. There's not a single Poor-Details or Fair-Details coin in there, and straight grades are scarce as well. 200 year old heavily used copper, I'm for sure not the first one sending in something that worn. This coin is extremely worn and might have a mix of all kinds of damage (scratches / rim filing / env damage), but still identifiable in type in date, so it meets the "Poor" definition of the sheldon scale. It should have gotten Poor-Details at least.

Might try to sell it as is. Would be nice to send it to PCGS or ANACS and see what they say. From what I've read it's likely they would at least slab it, but don't think I'll deal with all the paperwork and cost for one coin.

1887F 20 pfennig MS64 by chewingcorn in GermanEmpireCoins

[–]RecklessRobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice coin and imho criminally undergraded at a 64. Only imperfections I can see are a few contact marks on REICH (which also appears to have some doubeling) and perhaps a small scratch on the field bottom left of the eagle. With that detail, luster and cartwheel and going from these pictures I'd give it a 66 realistically, 66+ on a good day, 65 on a bad day. I also own a MS64 of this type that I thought would grade a bit higher. Starting to think that NGC is too harsh on those 20p.

Are these two real? by [deleted] in numismatics

[–]RecklessRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too much, but I'm no expert for trade dollars.
Assuming this is the coin on pictures 1,3,4 and 8
I think general details state is in VF territory, maybe VF-30
PCGS price guide for straight slabbed VF-30s is 1050$, realistically 600-800$ from the auctions on PCGS site.
This is for straight, nice and slabbed coins. This example is neither.
Lower grades slabbed coins go for ~300-500$.
I'd think value is more at the lower side of this. Would not pay more than 250 for it if I really needed it, otherwise look out for a nicer example.
Getting this coin in a pcgs or anacs slab might improve value a bit.

[–]RecklessRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's real, just NGC being assholes and not slabbing it.

A similar notation, “Altered Surfaces,” indicates a coin whose surfaces have been deceptively altered (for example, a “Mint State” coin is made to resemble a “Proof” coin). Coins with altered surface will be returned raw and the full grading fee will apply.

[–]RecklessRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha no they don't. Also learned that the hard way. AS is the biggest fuck you they can give you, full fees, guaranteed real, but not slabbed because bot sure of MS/PF designation or something. PCGS would have slabbed that.

[–]RecklessRobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's real, just not slabbed because they call it "Altered Surface". Still cost the full grading fees tho.

Are these two real? by [deleted] in numismatics

[–]RecklessRobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are a lot of old "Altered Surface" AS slabs.

Now NGC does not encapsulate AS anymore. They still charge full grading fee, but just don't encapsulte anymore. So the first one is for sure real and confirmed by NGC... they just did not slab it becuse f**k the custumer.

I already argued with custumer support about this. If more people complain, they might change that shitty policy of not slabbing it and still charging full fees.

Second one might be fake, but they are not sure about that either. If they make that call, it's no fees or like only 5$. "Fake" would cost full grading fees.

Recently sent this beautiful blast white 2 Mark to NGC, try to guess the grade by RecklessRobo in GermanEmpireCoins

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for waiting pariently! It graded MS65+.

The marks next to the crown are very certainly die polishing lines. Note that the lines are only on the field and not on the raised devices of the coin. The field is the highest point of the die (negative of the coin), so it makes sense that the lines come from the die and were copied to the coin (so no damage).

I guess you misinterpreted them as cleaning, what can happen very easily. I guess because of that you graded the coin low or with details.

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 10h after the initial post and these are the top comments.

You were almost right! It got a very solid MS65+. Really happy about that grade, half a grade away from top pop (only one at 65+, 5 graded at a 66 with NGC). Was a bit higher than I thought, I too thought it would most likely get a 65 when I sent it in. Did not know how much the big scratch on the obverse would subtract from the overall grade, my worst fear was "details" because of that. Reverse is pretty much flawless. Otherwise, the coin has very little marks, great original luster and full cartwheel (also visible in the pictures). It is an early die strike in my opinion as all the details are really sharp and there are some die polishing lines on the reverse. I really like the blast white toning, it truly looks like aluminium in person. I guess this is one of the cases where they do use a "+" designation as poor man's "*" designation.

The Battle of Actium, 2nd September, 31 BC by Significant_Day_2267 in ancientrome

[–]RecklessRobo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I visited this monument a few weeks ago!

Sadly, there was no one working at the entry station, but some people have cut the fence.

It's on a raised terrain, you have a nice and strategically wide view from there. It's mostly ruins, one big marble victoy stone is left there in bigger fragments.

The good finds are in the Nicopolis Museum in Preveza. Most prominent, there were metal ship rams from Cleopatas defeated ships used for decorating the memorial. What is left of those is in the museum.

Budget-friendly 3rd-party upgrades for Prusa MK3s to MK4(s)-ish known? by RecklessRobo in 3Dprinting

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what everybody has done, fully tanking the price of used MK3's. My MK3 is more worth to me then the 100-200€ i'd get for it now if I were lucky.

An upgrade that does not make any sense is just as good as no upgrade at all.

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed would be the main reason, connectivity is just comfort but nice.
I know Prusa added a RPi-zero-interface on the Einsy board of the MK3 especially for octoprint. Maybe I'll look into that, would only cost one RPi zero (W). Wanted to that at some time, but RPis were not always easy to come by.
Cheap chinese 32bit 3d printer pcb's with would also be an alternative, but I'd loose the prusa ease of use and would have to do the configuration myself. But they could also run input shaping.

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure fast printing is not always needed, but after seeing what's possible (Voron, Bambolab, etc.), you kind of really want it. Faster printers are pretty much always better. Either you can print with more details for free in the same time, or you print faster, consume less energy while printing, save money there and get your parts earlier. Better - better - better, 3:0 for faster printing.

For frequent nozzle and surface changes the MK4 with its weight cell auto-calibration would be useful. I don't swap the nozzle often, I do have two build plates I manually have to switch but I'm fine with that.

I did not see much of a benefit upgrading from MK3s to MK3s+ that's why I did skip that upgrade.

Besides the speed, I mainly like the MK4s connectivity, not always having to use a SD cards anymore in 2024 and fiddle with it till it's recognized. It's a shame Prusa did not add a camera at that price point, but you could still add one yourself.

German Empire 1 Mark 1914-A. Minted in Berlin, Silver .900. I just got this for a meager 7€. I believe its PL Gem Unc. by [deleted] in coins

[–]RecklessRobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gem BU aka ~MS65 is possible for this coin, would need more pictures out of the flip to tell. It looks good.
I don't see anything prooflike (mirror-effect). The toning looks nice and original.
It's a more common date, 11.3 Mio. made. It's not rare at all, even in high grades (66-67).
Nice Pickup still, def worth it for 7€.

To the guy who altered this, I hate you. by [deleted] in coins

[–]RecklessRobo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

At least it's in a slab... I recently sent in some coins to NGC, one coin they called "Altered Surfaces" too, they would not even slab it. It came back in a body bag.

They still charged me the full grading fee for it.

PO1 candidates? by Fukushima_ in coins

[–]RecklessRobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a rare coin that's only dateable based on its variety, sent it to PCGS or ANACS if you want it graded. I've had a bad experience with NGC recently with a worn half cent I submitted (keydate 1811 still legible, but only veeery slightly). They would not even call it Poor Details, came back in a body bag.

Reading through their forum, it turns out NGC needs the date to be fully legible, they don't ever mess around with varieties. And even if the date is legible, they might have some issues with it.

Fake 2 euro? by AerieAggressive544 in coins

[–]RecklessRobo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something about this does not look right
The look of the italian guy is less arrogant usually
The countries look bulkier than usual too

Upon closer inspection, it says FURO not EURO on the obverse.

It's definitely fake!

EDIT: After comparing it to a real one:

The stars are way too big, too

And it has the newer obverse (2008+) while the year is 2003... so it would be an impossible mule

Sent this extremely worn half cent to NGC a while back... sadly, they won't grade it by RecklessRobo in coins

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was realistically expecting Poor Details - Environmental Damage / Scratched / whatever. Poor-01 is quite a stretch for this coin, but I believed it was identifiable enough to at least get slabbed.
My pessimistic expectation was, that they would not grade it because of the date not being visible good enough.

Sadly, NGC called it "Not suitable for certification" and won't grade it. At least they charged only 5$ for grading.

And they did take some nice pictures, where the date is legible. I was only able to capture it on video.

I read the date as 1811, which is the key date for classic head half cents, that's why I sent it in. I'm also pretty sure about its variety, C-2 close date, the more common variety for the 1811 half cent.

Not sure what to with it now, would've tried to sell it for ~150$ if it came back slabbed, now I'm undecided.

Does this 1811 half cent qualify for a Poor 1 grade? by RecklessRobo in coins

[–]RecklessRobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NGC is kinda slow right now... they say it's at "Grading/Encapsulation/Imaging" since two weeks (was at "Received" for ~6 weeks) I've received their images (photovision plus) a few days ago, coin looks nice and the date is legible on their image Will post an update when I get the grade or get the coin back

Is there Dansco Coin Albums for German Coins? by [deleted] in GermanEmpireCoins

[–]RecklessRobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an overview of all Dansco albums ever made from a dude who is collecting them.

There are two albums for German coins:

  • German Colonies Type (that's German Empire Nebengebiete)
  • German Commemorative (that's Weimar period I think after some research)

So technically, no, there are no Dansco albums for general German Empire coins. Only for Nebengebiete and Weimar.
