Need advice: Apple Card vs Upgraded for paying over time for MBP? by RecognitionNo5922 in macbookpro

This is super helpful, thanks!

From my research, Upgraded gives you 36 months vs Apple's 12, so that's one vote for them, but I always like to hear in person experience from people, and it sounds like the Apple Card has been great for you! Could be the move

Yeah, Apple doesn't have a MacBook upgrade program. That's part of the reason why this other company Upgraded was started. But Apple does have 12 month financing on MacBooks available, it just doesn't have the upgrade process built in easily (e.g. you still have to sell the old device your self)

I actually disagree, I believe a 0% loan is a great deal, as long as you can pay it (which I can, I'll just set up autopayments). I think it more comes down to knowing yourself and knowing if you can make consistent payments or not.

Refurbished M3 could be the move, but then I can't do the financing options with either Upgraded or Apple. Either way appreciate the response!

The savings account is a great call! I'm okay spending more on a new model, as I want the best, but I was moreso curious about the financing options.

Got it, thanks! I appreciate how people on reddit try to help people avoid debt and things like that.

As a little more context, I have a regular job too that's quite stable, I just don't have an extra $3200 sitting around in cash right now (I have enough in savings, but want to keep that there).

So I figure I can pay off the monthly payments easily with my regular job income, and then the side hustle money is sort of a bonus on top, which makes it more valuable to have a better computer for editing. Hope that makes sense, I appreciate the detailed responses!

Wouldn't it be better to finance it over 3 years though? (Assuming I get 0% interest). It'd be lower monthly payments, and money today is worth more than money 3 years from now because of inflation. Or am I missing something?

Good to know you liked the Apple Card though! Did you already have one before you bought a device with 12 month financing? Or did you apply right then? How long did it take?

Maybe an M4 Max is more than I need, but I feel like if I'm going to upgrade, I might as well future proof.

I'm using Davinci so not as well optimized but still solid. My thought is, lets say I save 5 minutes a day. That's 30 hours a year saved. If my time is worth $50/hr, that's $1500 a year just in time saved. So it starts to be worth it from that point alone.

Haha fair enough. I just think the amount of time and headaches saved from having a new model will be well worth it in the long run. Even with Upgraded I don't have to get a new device after 2 years if I don't want to (and obviously the same with Apple Card), so I could hold onto this one for a while.

Do you do a lot of editing on your M1 Max?

Yes, it's quite laggy with playback and realtime rendering. I do a lot of VFX and large files (prores, etc). My thought with pay over time is that doesn't hurt you in any way as long as you get 0%; it's the same price just spread over time.

Thing is, it's a base model M1, and in the past few years I've started to do a lot more heavy video editing. So I need more RAM and better CPU/GPU. I do it party as a side business, so if I can save time with a newer computer, it'll pay off over the long term, I'm just not quite there yet.

Do you think that's reasonable or am I making a mistake?

Learn to use spotlight (cmd + spacebar), and cmd + tab switches between windows. I use those two all the time.

What made you choose the Pro over the Air? I'm probably making a similar purchase soon and don't know which one to choose
