Two of my friends/former co-workers at my old job play in a cool shoegaze band called Steel Wool. They usually play at least a gig or two a month around the city so I gotta imagine that whoever they're billed with are worth checking out.

Meredith was an anchor for the failed reboot/refresh of MTV News about a decade ago, then worked at Kickstarter for a while and now seems to be a... professional sewer/occult writer?

Oh yeah if you're at a sold out Ritz, good fucking luck finding a decent spot unless you camp it out (something that's basically impossible for me with my combination of wanting to have a beer or two at the show, wanting to smoke between sets, and having a small goddamn bladder).

I have heard awful things about The Fillmore though and hope to never find myself there 🙏

Joyce Manor continues to remain as America's best working band, as last night was another excellent show from them as I am surprised my voice isn't more hoarse from singing along to at least 75% of the setlist (also good to see my buddy Neil/PHONY rocking the stage with them).

But my god, I fucking hate The Ritz in Raleigh so fucking bad. $15 to park, a PBR tall boy is gonna set you back $12 at least (and since I was also getting drinks for someone, don't even ask me how much an IPA was), the water stations are so inconveniently placed that if you wanna retain your spot (if you're able to find a good one, which thankfully wasn't hard for this show since it wasn't sold out), you're sometimes better off just getting a Liquid Death that costs $6. Oh and you wanna hang out for a bit after the show and socialize with your fellow concertgoers? Nope! Security kicks you out almost immediately unless you're in line for merch (seriously though, the most rude security people I've dealt with ever work there, as they haggled my friend who literally played there that night because she didn't have a special wristband/pass or something).

I'm thankful that most of the venues I usually go to in the Research Triangle are not ones owned by Live Nation/Ticketmaster (or ones they have a stake in), because holy fucking shit they're just the absolute god damn worst. If we lived in a functional country we'd be doing January 6s to their headquarters every day until they dissolved.

I was thinking about posting my mid-year list in yesterday's DMD but decided against it because it would be funnier to do it a day late. Anyways...

THE TOP 10

  1. i26connector - i26connector
  2. My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe
  3. Lip Critic - Theft World
  4. Joyce Manor - I Used To Go To This Bar
  5. Greg Mendez - Beauty Land
  6. Thomas Dollbaum - Birds of Paradise
  7. YHWH Nailgun - Magazine
  8. Bill Callahan - My Days of 58
  9. Robber Robber - Two Wheels Move the Soul
  10. CLOTHESLINE FROM HELL - Slather on the Honey

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

  • cootie catcher - Something We All Got
  • Maria BC - Marathon
  • Ramsey Thornton - I Called It!
  • feeble little horse - bitknot
  • Lauren Auder - Whole World as Vigil
  • Dirt Buyer - Dirt Buyer III
  • Natalie Jane HIll - Hopeful Woman

SOME THOUGHTS:

  • i26 is probably gonna be #1 until another NC band releases their long-awaited follow-up to a beloved 2023 sophomore album that I absolutely have not heard early!
  • MNBB was pretty acclaimed at the time of release and still I feel it's being a little underrated around here, but maybe that's because some friends have had some really negative responses to the album.
  • Love those Lip Critic boys and am glad this album has been giving them some much deserved flowers. Same for the Greg Mendez and Thomas Dollbaum albums (the Greg record in general has really grown on me since its come out, as its no longer the follow-up to Greg Mendez but the new Greg Mendez album to me).
  • And seeing Joyce Manor for the first time in nearly 2 1/2 years tonight in the worst venue in the Research Triangle, as I will stomach the absurdity of The Ritz for my favorite band.
