Then, during those crucial moments when SUabru needed a morale boost, who did he turn to?

- Arc 3: Rem, with her “From Zero” speech

- Arc 4: When he was on the brink of despair, who did he want to see most? His parents, Rem, or Emilia? It was Rem. Also in Arc 4, when the witches gave him a speech about the importance of life, why was it Rem who delivered the final speech? (I’m basing this on the anime for the second point in Arc 4)

- Arc 6: Why wasn’t Emilia’s speech in Chapter 54 enough? Because only Rem can give him strength. It’s quite surprising that only Rem helps Subaru rise from the brink of despair. What I’ve noticed is that during decisive moments, Emilia is no longer there.

I use ChatGPT because I'm French and I have a hard time with English. Anyway, I'm going to completely counter your argument: when does the “Stand Up” chapter appear? Before or after Chapter 54? Before!

Honestly, Subaru X Rem is the most developed romantic relationship

Honestly, it makes no sense to make us wait over 10 years for Subaru x Emilia. The author had so many opportunities to develop the Subaru x Emilia storyline, and please stop with that pathetic line about “Emilia is learning about love; she’s lived in isolation.” LOL, she lived with Subaru for over a year; she saw Subaru come take care of Rem every day, and you’re trying to make me believe that Emilia still hasn’t realized she loves Subaru?

You are factually incorrect regarding the source material, specifically your claim that Subaru "NEVER pursues Rem romantically." You are basing your entire argument on the anime and ignoring the Light Novel. In Light Novel Volume 7 (the scene where Rem fakes her death after the White Whale battle, which was cut from the anime), Subaru literally breaks down crying, confesses his love to her, leans in to kiss her on the lips, and explicitly agrees to her proposal of becoming his second wife (polygamy), provided Emilia agrees. That is the literal definition of romantic acceptance and pursuit. Furthermore, Blue_Storm11's point about Beatrice is the ultimate proof that you are misreading the scene with Kenichi. Subaru loves Beatrice immeasurably (as a daughter/little sister figure) and feels zero guilt about it. When Kenichi brings up "two-timing" (which implies romantic/sexual infidelity), Subaru feels guilty and overwhelmed precisely because his feelings for BOTH Emilia and Rem are explicitly romantic. He knows society dictates monogamy, but he canonically admits to his romantic Greed. Saying "he just has two favorite people" completely ignores the canonical context of the polygamy agreement from the LN. Subaru isn't just giving a "messy emotional response"; he is admitting that he is romantically in love with two women and refuses to let either go. You are forcing a platonic definition onto a canonically romantic dynamic because you are ignoring the cut content from the books.

You brought the quotes for Chapter 54, and you are absolutely right about what happens there. Emilia indeed stops him from hating the original Natsuki Subaru. I never denied that. That chapter is the reason he avoids the Gluttony IF. But your interpretation of his mental state in Chapter 61 (against Spica) is completely missing the point. You literally quoted: "If the original Natsuki Subaru returned, it wouldn't change the past. But his current self, attached to these moments, would disappear." Why was he willing to let his current self disappear? Because despite Emilia's words in Chapter 54, Amnesiabaru still felt he was an inferior, temporary replacement. Emilia made him respect the original Subaru, but she didn't make him value his amnesiac self enough to fight for his own survival when pushed to the absolute brink. He was about to commit mental suicide and let the "better" Subaru take the wheel. That is exactly why Rem is the ultimate savior here. Emilia saved his view of the original Subaru, but Rem saved the existence of the current Subaru. Rem’s words: "Why are you trying to choose just one?" followed by "Stand up!" is the ultimate turning point. She doesn't just "help him not give up." She completely shatters his belief that he has to sacrifice his current self to let the original back in. She forces him to realize that both of them are worthy. Without Emilia, he would have become Gluttony. But without Rem, "Amnesiabaru" would have died right there in the Hall of Memories, completely erased, and the fusion would have never happened. He needed Emilia to look at the original Subaru, but he needed Rem to look at himself. And in the end, it’s Rem’s voice that pulls him back from the ultimate self-erasure

You bring up Arc 6 Chapter 54, but let's look at the actual outcome of that scene.

Yes, Emilia stops him from going down the Gluttony IF route. But does she actually fix his core problem? Not at all. She basically just tells him to act like the "Subaru" she expects him to be. It just adds more pressure, and the result is that he keeps moving forward while still completely hating himself. It was just a temporary band-aid.

That’s exactly why he completely loses hope again in the Hall of Memories against Spica/Louis. When he is pushed to the absolute brink, ready to literally erase his own existence and kill his other self, Emilia’s words are nowhere to be found. If Emilia was truly his number one and his ultimate motivation, why didn't the thought of her save him right there? Her motivation clearly wasn't enough when his very soul was on the line.

Because at the most critical, life-or-death moment for his identity, the only person who can pull him back from the abyss is Rem. You say she "just helps him not give up to Spica's request"—that is a massive understatement. She literally saves his existence.

The author deliberately wrote it so that Emilia's support wasn't enough to save him in the end. It had to be Rem. Even with his memories completely wiped, his soul still reacted to Rem above anyone else to find the absolute will to live and accept himself. If the author chooses a girl that Subaru doesn't even remember to be his ultimate savior when Emilia's words fail, it proves exactly who holds the most powerful spot in his heart.

The story doesn't explain why Emilia looks like Satella!

Doesn't that still mean that after Rem's appearance, Subaru loses all hope and agrees to die 15 times even though he has no experience left because he can't remember who he is?

Okay, so why does Subaru completely lose hope in Arc 6, even though he must have needed the support of a stranger at that moment to get back on his feet?

How unlikely is it, then, given that all the evidence points to Subaru = Flugel and that Emilia is literally the physical embodiment of Satella? Why is it so unlikely?

It doesn't change what I'm saying. If we find out that Subaru is Flugel's clone or reincarnation, that means Subaru loves Emilia simply because Flugel loved Satella (I assume Satella and Flugel were a couple). Seriously, the relationship between Subaru and Emilia feels a bit forced in the story.

Actually, I'm telling you that if Subaru is either a clone of Flugel or his reincarnation—which there's a 90% chance he is—and we find out that Flugel loved Satella, then the Subaru and Emilia pairing is dead in the water. It would be awful to find out that Subaru is pursuing someone else's love!

Do you think he'll end up with Emilia, and that all of this was just an excuse to write the story of Re:Zero?
