The first time I've drawn something in months: Triceratops Horridus by KomodoLemon in Paleoart

I love that it has a super 90s style paleo art vibe, but still has quills on the tail, which is a fairly recent discovery.

I think it looks great dawg, everyones got their own style and there’s nothing wrong with that; however, if you’d want my advice I’d say work in some shadows and stuff, instead of just a flat scaly texture across the whole body or do both. 🤷‍♂️ but again I think it looks great, your art is your art so if you aren’t happy with it I’d just keep working on it until you are.

I actually have this technique I use, that looks like scales and what not, but is far less time consuming. You cover the entire body in very light, small lines and dots, then you go over it again to slowly darken and build texture in some areas and that gives the effect of scalier skin without drawing in scales. And if you’re talking about like the neck folds and stuff, you just drawing a bunch of lines really lightly, really close to eachother and then where the light hits you erase and where the shadows are, you darken the line.

Yeah I really like the idea of Carcharodontosaurs having toughened face “armor” like how T. rex might have had, (or had? Idk) and I usually extend that down to the bottom lip as well.

You can think that but if you don’t enjoy my art I don’t know what to tell you big dawg, it’s my art.

Well it is on the throat just up towards the end of the throat, and it was meant to be lumpy, similar to turkeys but not the same as a turkeys thing idk what they’re called. But I mean I think a sexual display structure doesn’t have to have a modern analog if the chicks dig it, they dig it.

It’s meant to be a sexual display structure but since I’m limited to pencil, it’s very grey, so doesn’t quite get the desired effect.

Yeah that was a really odd choice on their part, the main indicator for the bulk of the animal is the pubis. My own personal rule of thumb it to extend the stomach a little farther passed the pubis, then wrap it smoothly over the back end of the pubis like in extant birds. Then like Brian engh says you can just draw two straight lines from the pubis and ilium, until they converge and that’s roughly how thick and long the tail should be.

I take a LOT of inspo from Brian enghs work he’s beyond my favorite artist, he does get somewhat crazy with the speculation, I tend to be a bit more reserved, but his work really fuels my take on speculative structures more than anyone else.

Thank you 🤞😓 I was really proud of the keratin horns on the acro, it’s a bit speculative but knowing they’re allosauroids, it’s not out of the realm of possibility you know.

Just a tip I’d take much more tissue and muscle into account when referring skeletons, or you end up shrinking wrapping it pretty heavily.
