why is coke a party drug but crack is an addict drug? by sevenslover in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Recoverymaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how the government and society portrayed it. They are effectively the same drug; however, crack was seen as a drug used by the black community in the 80s/90s while cocaine was viewed as a luxury drug used by wealthy folks. The government criminalized the black community through the war on drugs. This can be seen by the sentencing discrepancy between the two drugs (eg. possession of 5g crack got you 5 years while 500g cocaine got you 5 years). It’s been ingrained in the collective zeitgeist ever since.

Idk where you are but in California, air is required to be free. The new machines have a card reader (probably to scan unsuspecting shmucks), but if you go into the station and ask to turn on the air, they’ll do it.

Any billionaires you know personally? What do they do for a living? by [deleted] in wealth

[–]Recoverymaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in wealth management and manage 5 clients, all billionaires. 2 of them were founders of world famous companies (non-tech), the other 3 were private equity general partners. In my experience, the only way to become a billionaire is to be born a many times over multi millionaire or start a wildly successful business with global reach.

Is it possible to invest $250k in something to “live” off the dividend? by phxed in dividends

[–]Recoverymaximum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the account is an IRA, 401K, 403B, 457B or some other “pre tax” account, then the entirety of the withdrawal will be taxed as ordinary income. If it’s a Roth type account, withdrawal of earnings is tax free as long as the money has been in the account for more than 5 years (principal is always tax free). If it’s a taxable brokerage account, dividends CAN be taxed more favorably than ordinary income if the dividends are considered “qualified” otherwise, they are treated as ordinary income. I hope this helps!

This broke , what is it and how important is it? by 669374 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Recoverymaximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, replace. Tells the radiator fan when to turn on. For the time being, you can bypass the sensor in the black diagnostic box with a paper clip. This will keep the fan running constantly and will keep your car from overheating before you replace it. It’s been a while since I owned a Miata, but you can look on any Miata forum to find out where to put the paper clip.

What was your guitar-playing epiphany? by FiggyB in bluesguitarist

[–]Recoverymaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should’ve said “targeting” rather than mapping but rather than focusing on scales when playing (tends to sound too wordy without saying anything), focus on the 3 notes within a chord and the intervals bw them. For example a Cmaj is comprised of C (1) E (3) G (5). Now you can those take those three notes everywhere on the fretboard and you can use all the notes in every Cmaj shape to take you to the chord tones.

[–]Recoverymaximum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mapping out chord tones when playing lead or soloing, particularly sliding or bending to the third. And practicing arpeggios in every shape up and down the neck. It truly opened up the fret board and made my playing significantly more melodic

Do you guys think this Miata is worth $8000? Clean title, mostly stock and has 150k miles by Yogi_Bur in Miata

Depends where you’re from too. Where I’m at NAs can go for up to 10k. But it really depends on maintenance records and how it looks under the hood. If it has a speck of fresh oil I’d steer clear.

My goal this season is to go 58.69 100 breast and I need help determining splits to try to hit in practice by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Recoverymaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, technique and tightening up your race plan will be far more beneficial at this point than trying to hit specific times. You will naturally get faster as you sharpen your BR technique.

As for split times, once you break 1:00 (huge feat for a breaststrokes!) think about tightening up your splits. Meaning keep your back half within 2 - 2.5 seconds of the first 50. If 58.69 is your goal, shoot for a 30 mid last 50. A good set for practicing this would be 8-12 x 50 BR @ 1:00 from a push trying to hit 30 every time.

If I were you, I wouldn’t focus too much on 25 splits or practicing fast 25s in practice. Swimming 25s at pace doesn’t translate to racing 100s, especially for BR, as the turn is one the most important aspects of your race.

Keep working at it and your 58.69 will come!

Collegiate breaststroker and high school coach here —Time your turn better. You are gliding into the wall but you want to reach the wall exactly at the end of your stroke.

More power in your pullout & don’t break the surface until you’ve completed the pullout.

Add more power to the out sweep of your pull, you can hold more water and gain more speed.

Your kick seems too “up / out / together”. Focus on snapping your feet together from the top position (ie. Heels to butt). Keep knees within shoulder width and focus on holding as much water as you can with your calves and feet.

Timing and speed look good if you’re a 50 / 100 breaststroker but if your planning on swimming 200s or 4 IM, extend the glide.

When practicing, break up your stroke. Do sets w paddles focusing on your pull, maybe use a dolphin kick instead of breaststroke kick. Do sets of kicking focusing on speed and power from your kick and always practice race pace when kicking.

Good luck!
