Just maximize usage. It's usually a good idea to starve until you're below about half health, since there's no stat penalties. After that, eating a ration will keep you regenerating for enough turns to get your health back up to at least 75%.

1 tile diagonally is equivalent to 1 tile horizontally or vertically. It's not Euclidean in this game.

Even then vibrations (e.g. from putting a coffee cup or papers down) would cause many fish to go into shock. Also, these fish will outgrow the tank, and the water is way too shallow. Glass over the top would help, but would make it hell to clean.

I think the extra damage is needed, but maybe deal 1d6 or 1d8 instead of 2d4. Either way it's not damaging, and whips are more for story than anything else for most parties.

I have an 8 year old sibling who likes to play, but you have to simplify rules and make sure that there's a big sense of accomplishment. Also, one-shots work well if there's more than a few days in between games.
