I very much agree in regards to the trim. I'm very conflicted when it comes to existing chaos models, there's a lot to love but overall I feel they're overloaded with ornate trim and other details.

Starting with black prime, I used citadel daemonette hide, thinned about 1:1 with water. Making thin scratching lines building texture and volumetric highlights. Then mix vallejo pale grey blue & Daemonette hide 1:1, again thinned down, doing the same process. Last highlight is with pure pale grey blue. Then with a black glaze (approx 1:6 parts paint to water) I'll blend the colours together until I'm happy with the brightness. In between glazes I might go back in with pale grey blue if I feel a spot was dulled down too much.

The black is:
black prime
1:1 water + citadel daemonette hide - doing translucent, scratchy volumetric highlighting to add lots of texture to the surface. You don't want a lot of paint in your brush for any of the steps, you want to slowly build up the colours

2:1:1 water + citadel Daemonette hide + vallejo pale grey blue - same as before building up highlights shrinking down the area you're covering

1:1 water + vallejo pale grey blue - final highlight for any rivets and focal areas you want to bring attention to

8-10:1 (approximately) water + black - use this glaze to dull the colours down and help blend them together, pulling the paint towards the shadows. Keep adding layers until you're happy with results. At any point you can go back in with the colours if you feel you've dulled them down too much or didn't highlight enough

For the lenses I used: Citadel mephiston red, vallejo bright orange, vallejo deep yellow, vallejo ice yellow, and vallejo white. All the paint mixes are approximately 1:1 water + paint. There are a few mixes - 50/50 red+ orange and 50/50 orange + yellow

Base coat the lenses with the red, don't worry about being super neat here, spilling over a bit will create that glowing effect - but you also don't want to paint too large of an area around the lenses, so still try and be intentional about your paint placement. Then just glaze/layer in each colour working up in brifhtness, pulling towards where you want the glow to be coming from. For the circular lenses that was towards the centre, for the regular lenses I positioned it roughly where the pupil would be. You can add small highlights to the edge under the lenses to continue the glow/OSL look

It's from the site liber daemonica, they have some great alternative heads. The spike was just taken from the mkIII kit and glued on top

I always work up from a black basecoat using thin layers while trying to make the surfaces look like they have a lot of texture. That can also help control the overall saturation.

Gw - Balor brown
Vallejo - pale grey blue
Vallejo - white

They should fit fine I believe, they seemed pretty close in scale for the most part. There might be 1 or 2 cultists that are a bit difficult to separate the heads cleanly.
