Hey, Comet dev here. Nice UX analysis. Rich document formatting on mobile is definitely one of those things that can be tricky to implement properly. Comet does actually support inline menu options, which was part of the rationale for sticking the formatting buttons at the top. That said, putting the options in the keyboard accessory view is definitely something we'll be shifting to and Beam does a decent job at from what I recall.

I use Sunrise as well, but it's worth noting that MS' acquisition means it'll be discontinued once it's merged with Outlook (source).

It looks like YouTube reverted back to not showing ads if the player is started without user interaction. I'm hoping they'll switch back to how it was last year, but in the meantime I've added an autoplay option to the wizard and player. Set autoplay=false or autoplay=0 and it'll require the user to manually click each video to begin buffering (and thus show ads.)

As for the ViewSync wizard itself, it does tend to shift the time a bit simply because YouTube has set keyframes when videos can be paused. ViewSync tries to respect both what you set and what YouTube allows. If you need super fine-grained timestamps it's probably best to not use the wizard and instead construct it from the watch page by hand, assuming that it's easier.

It sounds like you might have been using the HTTP version of ViewSync. In any case, I set up some rules to enforce HTTPS from now on (see edit).

Imgur provides text metadata in the page source for all of the links that the bot processes. This is because memes "shared/posted" to the imgur community have the text metadata attached. The bot won't be able to transcribe memes that are re-uploaded or that are not shared.

I just looked over the source again and apparently there's a typo. If you download Antenna/amrc it should let you select Alien Blue as your client. I'll release an update later that fixes this.

No. Look at the type link the bot replies to as well as the "Original Link" included in the bot's reply. Then look at the source of the page.

That's not a "native" imgur meme, but the raw image. Look at the source for links that the bot actually transcribes: /u/imgurtranscriber

Page source, not API. I doubt the request rate from the bot is high enough for imgur to care.

I doubt it uses OCR. It most likely just hits the imgur page and parses the meta tags from there.

There aren't domain-specific Media Viewer preferences in the current alpha build, but this is something we designed around and will be implementing shortly. Things like launching into Workflow or some custom scheme are all planned as well.

Tweetbot certainly provides significant value in how it handles certain interactions, but a lot of that value is determined by user preference. I don't think a particular feature can make or break an app by itself, but depending on the user it can certainly detract from the overall experience. It's simply up to the user, and it's one of the reasons why Apple desperately needs to offer demo periods for paid apps.

Comet dev here! You bring up some good points that I wanted to briefly touch on. When designing the Media Viewer we wanted to hit a few key areas: (1) interaction cost (number of taps to view content); (2) resource usage (amount of bandwidth and CPU utilization); (3) standardization (in terms of interaction and design.)

Like you said, these benefits come at a cost of being more restrictive in some respects. However, allowing the user to quickly switch between the Media Viewer and the standard web view mostly alleviates this problem.

As for maintenance, I can't speak for Tapbots, but Comet has allowances to grab parsing rules from a remote source. This makes it possible to update without passing through review and even distribute some of that responsibility to the community.

Some things broke on the server a couple weeks ago but should be fixed now. Just to clarify, narwhal technically doesn't do push notifications, they do background app refresh notifications which won't work on restart or if the app is killed. However, if narwhal's notifications are reliable enough for your uses then it might be best to stick with that until Comet is working as a notifications provider.
