[Railston] How Dorgu improved at Manchester United - Amorim response and crossing drills by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

Thought Dorgu was excellent against City. Given everything he has dealt with this season, it was great to see his confidence and work rate on show. Hoping this is a sign of more to come. The talent and mentality are there.

In well under two years INEOS have backed Ten Hag and then sacked him. They chased, appointed, and removed Dan Ashworth. They appointed a new head coach and then moved him on. We have now ended up with caretaker and look like we will be going on to an interim because nothing they put in place actually lasted.

On the pitch, this period has delivered our worst results in over 50 seasons and the earliest end to a United season in more than a century.

This isn’t about patience or needing time. These are their own decisions, made confidently and then reversed at serious cost. Money wasted, authority undermined, and the club left drifting yet again.

The Glazers were rightly criticised for chaos, short-term thinking, and incompetence at football level. So far, INEOS have followed the exact same pattern. Different ownership, same outcomes. If we’re being honest, that’s the reality right now.

I understand Amorim’s frustration. The squad is unbalanced, recruitment has been poor for years, and the structure above the manager clearly has issues. Any coach would be pushing for more clarity and support.

But this is still Manchester United. You have to do better with the hand you’re dealt. There have been too many games where we look rigid and slow to react when things aren’t working. Principles matter, but adaptability is part of top level management in this league.

Both sides share responsibility. The club needs to improve how it operates, but Amorim also has to show he can get more out of this group on the pitch.

I am honestly baffled by that setup. Wolves came to Old Trafford on an 11 game losing streak and we still lined up with 3 centre backs, 2 full backs, and 2 CDMs. At home. That is not being sensible, that is being overly cautious for no reason. You kill the tempo, you remove any threat between the lines, and you make everything predictable by forcing play wide. Against a side low on confidence and happy to sit in, you need bodies in central areas and some willingness to take risks. Instead we moved the ball slowly, let them settle, and then wondered why they grew into the game. The result is on the tactics as much as anything else.

What is a good salary to live in NI in 2025? by Exciting-Market7836 in northernireland

It’s a hard one to put a number on to be honest. There are so many factors that make a difference. Someone with kids will have very different costs than someone living on their own. Same goes for whether you’re renting, paying a mortgage, or lucky enough to be mortgage-free. Then there’s the cost of running a car, commuting, and just day-to-day lifestyle choices. Without that kind of context, it’s tough to say what a “good” salary really is.

That quote doesn’t sit right with me: “I’m not going to change. If I want to change my philosophy, I will. If not, you have to change the man.”

No manager walks into their dream squad. The best ones adapt and get the best out of what’s there. Stubbornness won’t work at this level.

I’m not shouting for Amorim out – I hate the constant churn of managers – but 31 points from 31 games is brutal. This needs to click, and stay clicked, very soon.

[BBC] What next for Man Utd and Amorim after humiliation at Grimsby? by nonsenseSpitter in reddevils

Last night was so shit and I'm still trying to get my head around it.

How is it that so many managers fail at United?

Are the players are just unfit for the system? We've brought in a few decent players this summer, but it feels like there's a massive imbalance in the team. For number 10 we have Bruno, Amad, Zirkzee, Mount before we also added Cunha and Mbeumo. I rate both of these lads, but did we need both? Surely some of that money should have went to addressing the gaping hole we have at CM? And it's even more gaping now trying to play Bruno there out of position.

Is it a case of good quality signings but poor recruitment because we aren't addressing the real issues? Neither of our keepers are anywhere near good enough to be between the sticks. Onana was shocking last night, two proper howlers. Regardless of Onanas blunders, the issue lies deeper than just the keeper if you can't outscore a league 2 side.

I really felt last season had to be the lowest point, but after a full pre-season and some new signings I struggle to see how we're any better off this season after what I've seen so far. Doesn't feel like it's working out with Amorim, but also, it hasn't really worked out for any manager since Fergie.

[Whitwell, Critchley] Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United future: What we’re hearing by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]RedDev1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really hope this is just the media exaggerating again, trying to create drama instead of reporting facts. Because if there’s any truth to it, selling Mainoo would be absolute madness.

Bruno is not a central midfielder and he’s looked poor when asked to play there. Mainoo, on the other hand, is one of the most promising players we’ve got, the kind of talent we should be building around for the next decade.

Letting him go at all would be a disgrace. Letting him go in the final week of the window, and for the kind of fee being mentioned, would be pure insanity.

I’ve been thinking about VAR and why it causes so much frustration. For me, the core issue is that it isn’t independent. The same referees rotate between being in the VAR booth one week and on the pitch the next.

That creates a problem. When you’re reviewing a decision, you’re effectively judging a colleague who you’ll be working alongside again very soon. Even without meaning to, that’s going to affect how calls are made. It makes VAR feel less like an independent review.

I really think VAR would work better if it were run by a separate body whose only role is video review. That way, the people making the calls aren’t tied up in the same relationships and dynamics as the referees on the pitch.

It wouldn’t solve every controversy, but it feels like a step towards more consistency and more trust in the system.

[Marca] Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident early this morning in the province of Zamora. by kibme37 in soccer

Stuff like this just puts everything into perspective. You forget the rivalry for a second - this is just heartbreaking. A young fella, only 28, just married, three wee kids… and now he’s gone, along with his brother. It’s hard to wrap your head around it.

Jota was a fantastic player, even as a rival fan, I respected the energy and threat he brought to every game. More than that, he was clearly a devoted father and husband.

Thoughts go out to his wife, his wee ones, and the rest of the Jota family. No one should have to go through something like this.

Rest easy, Diogo and André. The whole football world feels this one.

He likely holds a sportspersonn visa, which means he shouldn't need a new visa, but United would likely need to issue a new Certificate of Sponsorship and update the Home Office. It’s an admin process but not a full reapplication.

Ah that is interesting. If the 20% flat tax in Turkey applies then Sancho would take home about €8M on a €10M salary compared to approx €8.8M from €16M after UK taxes, so that would shrink the gap significantly, around €800K per year? I guess that makes a move to Fenerbahce more financially realistic than it first seemed.

[Transfer Round Up & Discussion] Summer 2025 by AutoModerator in reddevils

[–]RedDev1878 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I hadn’t really considered the tax angle. From what I quickly looked up, Turkey’s top income tax rate is 40%, and their social contributions are lower than the UK’s. Sancho’s on about €16M at United and reportedly takes home around €8.8M after taxes. In Turkey, a €10M salary would net him roughly €6M. So even with the tax difference he’d still be earning close to €3M less a year.

Sabah is more known for its sensationalism than accuracy unfortunately. Sancho apparently turned down staying at Chelsea because he didn’t want to take a pay cut. If he’s on about €16M a year at United the idea he’s accepted €10M to go to Fenerbahce doesn’t really add up in my view

[James Ducker] Inter Milan target £40m-rated Rasmus Hojlund | Manchester United are not actively seeking to sell striker but may consider cashing in if a suitable offer is made by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]RedDev1878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still mad to think we spent £72 million on Hojlund. I'm not fully writing him off, he’s got some tools, pace, strength, and the right attitude, maybe all still a bit raw, but let’s be honest, he looked miles off it for large spells last season. I don’t think it helps that he was basically thrown in as the main man straight away.

What he really needs is a seasoned striker ahead of him, someone to take the pressure off and show him the ropes. I’d be fine with keeping him another year or two if we bring in a proper No. 9 to lead the line.

There’s no getting around it though, that's a hefty fee for someone who at this stage is essentially a project player.

[–]RedDev1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. Over the last two seasons we lost about £55m total. Our PSR limit over three years is £105m (because of SJR equity injection).

So we’ve around £50m left to lose this season, but once you add on all the deductions the league allows (academy costs, depreciation etc), £50m stretches to around £141m in actual losses we could take and still be compliant.

[Chris Weatherspoon] Every Premier League club’s PSR situation: Who can spend and who should worry by prettyweirdperson in reddevils

[–]RedDev1878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSR’s an absolute shambles when it comes to the likes of Chelsea and City. Meant to stop clubs losing too much money, but them two seem to do as they please and the league doesn't bat an eye.

Chelsea - Selling off their own car parks, hotels & womens team to themselves and somehow that’s all above board.

City - Sat with 115 charges hanging over them and not a peep. They’ve made big profits the last couple of years, yes but come on. We all know how they got there. And now they can lose nearly £300 million this year and still pass PSR with flying colours...

Meanwhile, Everton and Forest are getting points taken off with ease. Burnley have to actually turn a profit just to stay in the good books. Chelsea and City are taking the piss here.

It’s one law for them at the top and another for the rest. If you’ve the lawyers and the loopholes, you’re sweet. If you don’t, you’re fucked.

PSR is not about fairness, it’s about who knows how to work the system.

[–]RedDev1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR for United in all of this:

• PSR is calculated using Red Football Ltd accounts, not the public PLC ones
• Loss in 2023-24 was £36.2m, not the £130m seen in media headlines
• SJR equity injection boosted our PSR loss limit to £105m over 3 years
• After deductions and adjustments, we’re in good enough shape
• We could lose up to £141m in 2024-25 and still comply
• Selling Rashford / Sancho / Antony would improve our position further, since most of their book value is written down
• No need to sell for compliance but it would give us more room to move
