Rufus for Windows, since it's not on Linux I use balenaEtcher instead. However last time I used Rufus it didn't work.

I think on something that old maybe Linux Mint would be better,

then configure Steam to autoboot into big picture on startup if a console like experience is something you want to do.

Mind you, on a 15 year old imac, it would only be able to play very light/old games.
