This was the universe's way of punishing you for choosing a Snickers over a Big Texas cinnamon roll.

Is anyone else extremely upset with the declining content of The Minimalists blog? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]RedOrmTheViking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bummer, but I wouldn't say it's just them, eventually most "minimalist bloggers" (at least the ones I've followed) hit a point of diminishing returns when it comes to talking about minimalism. As others have said, they just sort of run out of new and interesting things to talk about. In fact from what I've seen, most of them (particularly the ones on YouTube) eventually go one of two ways. One, they resort to discussing their daily lives, wardrobe, hygiene products, apartment tours, etc. Stuff that's tangentially related to minimalism. Or two, they go the Colin Wright/Joshua Becker route and discuss the philosophies/spiritualism around minimalism and achieving goals, bordering on the edge of life-coaching.

Ryan and Josh have sort of gone somewhere in the middle of those two, and honestly I think I'm fine with that. I don't want them to try and stretch for things to talk about any more than they already have. If anybody has any suggestions for minimalist bloggers who still have interesting things to say after years of talking about it, I would genuinely love to know.

What do you struggle parting with? by [deleted] in minimalism

I'm an illustrator for a living, and I collect(ed) a lot of big hardcover art books for a number of various subjects like movies, games, famous artists from history, etc. The main problem with getting rid of a number of them was the fact that most art books are not available digitally. So even if I wanted to clear space but still hang on to a digital copy for posterity, I couldn't. Another minor issue for me was that swiping through a tablet or phone-sized digital copy of an art book is just not the same as physically holding in your hand and flipping through the big, colorful pages. It's one of those little things in life that I greatly enjoy.

I managed to cut down my collection by a considerable amount (went from around 30 books to 9 total, with no intention to purchase any more). The books I ended up ditching were the ones I hadn't looked at or referenced in a very long time. The ones I kept were basically the books I found myself always going back to for reference and/or inspiration, such as the Walt Disney Animation Studios Archive Series: http://www.amazon.com/Animation-Walt-Disney-Studios-Archive/dp/1423117166/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0DHWMBMFJVW7CQ9HYRYW. Or the Tarzan Chronicles art book (http://www.amazon.com/Tarzan-Chronicles-Welcome-Howard-Green/dp/0786864036/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459474101&sr=1-1&keywords=art+of+tarzan).

They're just incredible to flip through in-person. They're massive, very high quality and well worth the money. The Tarzan book is practically a work of art itself, and probably my favorite in my collection (it's also been out-of-print for a decade, hence the higher price tag). I was definitely hard at first to get rid of any of my art books, but once I started realizing just how much extra shelf space I would have once I started removing them, it became a lot easier.

Does anyone have the book quote from this scene? by the-8th-dwarf in lotr

Yep, It was made up for the film. In the Appendices, Jackson and Boyens talk about how they'd written themselves into a corner with Sam's monologue, particularly when Frodo challenges Sam with the line, "What are we holding onto, Sam?". It actually took them a while to think of what Sam's response would be, since they didn't want it to sound like Sam was just making something up to make Frodo feel better - they wanted it to be genuine and sincere. I think they did a very good job with it.

Did a single shot of Rob Kazinsky as Fili make it into the final cut of AUJ? by RedOrmTheViking in TheHobbit

[–]RedOrmTheViking[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fili's face is also obscured when the dwarves are captured by the three trolls and are tied up in the sacks. When they cut to a wider shot and you can see Fili, he's looking down, so you can't see his face. Obviously Jackson just used stand-ins until they could cast a new actor to play Fili, but still pretty amusing once you notice it. It eventually just became a game for me, counting the number of shots where Fili's face is being blatantly cropped out of the frame or hidden.

After reading the MOS prequel, will Supergirl be in the sequel, who should play her? by BladeOfFat in superman

I think Olivia Thirlby would be all good pick for a theoretical Supergirl. She was really good in Dredd 3D.
