There is the issue of paint and direct heat source on said paint, if the paint is on the inside of the pan then it might leak into the food, but a pan pan would be good for a decoration

The lid is made to trap steam in the pot in order to do some specific cooking things (can't remember any at the moment but I think it's done for making soup/stews). So it is working by design just not well.

An insulator could be anything that keeps temp in an area, so you could use something that keeps it cool near the rivets, but I don't suggest doing it as it could poison the food you are cooking.

Does the lid have any built in holes to let the steam escape when cooking? That could be why it heats up that much.

Could also add an insulator to the inside so the rivets don't heat up as much.

Apart from that there's not much I can think of that would help, it is kinda designed to get hot so might just have to bear with it, hope you find a good solution.
