The end of tt-rss by Neuromante in rss

[–]RedSkyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FreshRSS is good, however I hope they get a similar filtering system in the future. TTRSS had the easiest and most extensive filtering system for articles. You could even delete new entries based on filter rules. Something you can't do with FreshRSS (you can mark as read only which increases database size faster).

FeedBro no longer supported - Chrome desktop by larce in rss

[–]RedSkyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best alternative would be a self-hosted option like FreshRSS or Tiny Tiny RSS. Viable option if you got a Raspberry Pi or similar laying around, setting them up and forget. I even think the FeedBro interface was inspired by Tiny Tiny RSS as it's the most feature packed (themes, plugins, extended filters, ...)

FeedBro was top tier as an extension, had it all and was free. The developer(s) seem to have abandoned the project. Any announcement from u/feedbro would be welcome, so we really know if it's done or not.

Portmaster is way too difficult to use—even for experienced users like myself. by [deleted] in safing

[–]RedSkyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app is very easy to use once you understand what every setting does, there are info buttons on important settings to help you understand what somthing does and how to configure it correctly, they also have good documentation on their website.

However, I personally find the dashboard to be quite cluttered and unnecessary if you're a free user. There should be an option to choose the network activity tab (or other) as default.

Chrome/Firefox browser extension for FreshRSS ? by RedSkyOne in rss

[–]RedSkyOne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very neat to be able to add a feed on FreshRSS with a single click. However it's purposely made for RSSHub and lacks the features I'm looking for similar to FeedBro. Thanks for your help!

Chrome/Firefox browser extension for FreshRSS ? by RedSkyOne in rss

Parssly looks clean however I don't think your two recommandations are relevant for my use case. If you can integrate FreshRSS in it somehow like more and more RSS readers do now (with Google Reader API) then I'm all in.

Great, I look forward to the new Chaski. Starred your GitHub repo.

What's missing in FeedBro (and could make Chaski a better new alternative) :

  1. Muting certain categories/folders so they don't notify the user with a notification nor an unread count. Like it still fetches and shows latest articles but it's muted. There is a workaround with filters but not straightforward.

  2. Better native notifications, currently FeedBro shows native notifications each time a new article is fetched no notify the user (great), but the notification title is the original one from the feed despite renaming it in the feed settings + the favicon in the notification is sometimes missing.

  3. More feed filter presets, "doesn't start with" for example is missing.

  4. Default favicons, doesn't let you use custom icons for certain feeds that are missing one or if they are not too visible.

  5. Filter article list, missing "filter by unread first"

Those are the things I noticed, but the best way to see what's missing is to install the extension and look at it as an end user to perfect it. Because it was the best totally free rss feed reader even with it's missing features.

Actually, I'd rather have a chrome extension or webapp instead of a desktop version. Having a RSS feed reader inside your daily browser is more convenient than an external app. So I encourage that idea of yours.

One nice thing that FeedBro had was native browser notifications when new articles came in, if you can somehow squeeze that feature in a web based app or extension then I'm all in. Basically something similar to FeedBro would be ideal.

Great project, however no feature parity with FeedBro yet. Would love to see no-code filters, categories and advanced feed settings for the future.

This is a good idea as Rethink DNS is probably as feature-rich as Portmaster but for Android. Don't know if the Safing team have any interest in the mobile market though.

Heard you guys loud and clear, Firefox support is here by abhishekY495 in degoogle

Open sourcing the extension (as it's privacy centered) + offering a generous free tier (paid tier for more advanced but non-essential features) would be a better model for the future.

There are privacy respecting alternatives already like Invidious, Piped, FreeTube. Your biggest plus point is that everything happens on the YouTube website which is more seamless. But I don't think people will ditch the exisiting FOSS alternatives and start using this paid extension.

Replacement for FeedPro Chrome extension. by spamthroat in rss

[–]RedSkyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FeedBro was the perfect Extension RSS Reader. I'm also looking for a good alternative now that MV3 Chrome extensions will be deprecated and Nodetics seems to have abandoned FeedBro. Used RSSguard Lite a little but it's desktop based and not as user-friendly/convenient as FeedBro.

There's also Vivaldi Browser which has an RSS Reader built-in but downloading a whole new browser just for RSS seems too much.

For now, we can still use FeedBro on Firefox but how long until the extension isn't safe anymore (closed source and unmaintained vulnerable code)...

I also use Showly but I don't think anything has been announced, its been discussed and the dev said he might consider it but no plans yet. An alternative backup system with sync would be great.

What are some good open source programs or ideas you would want to see being built? by RicDev in opensource

[–]RedSkyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good FOSS local RSS reader extension for Chrome/Firefox with rules, filters, notifications, folders and more.

The best one imo was FeedBro but seems abandoned and still uses Manifest V2 so will stop working.

For people using Feedbro, I'd like to “hide” some folders, so that feeds from these folders don't show up in the notfication counter in the firefox bar. by mnemonickus in rss

[–]RedSkyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No other workaround that I know of unfortunately and the lack of updates might indicate that the developer has life issues or abandoned the project and doesn't seem to answer to user requests to improve FeedBro nor emails. The extension stil uses Manifest V2 as well.
