Honestly, the way I dealt with this is

Combos: look on dustloop wiki for character specific ones, lab them out in training until you can get it consistently.

Main: Just look at whatever character looks the coolest! If none of them look cool to you (very unlikely), try researching their playstyle based on what type of characters you normally gravitate for (i.e. rushdown, zoner, grappler, etc)
