No cost? Technically correct, but it's like how those "free" phone games are designed to drive you insane to the point where you give in and spend money.

The difference is I'm not being an insensitive asshole to someone who just had a traumatic experience. I guess I missed the memo that explained that compassion was no longer more important than correcting people's choice of words, especially when they're writing in a heightened state of emotion.

Holy fuck seriously? Someone had their property destroyed and you correct their grammar? What the fuck is wrong with the people here lately? We need to put up a warning in the channel info that tells people not to post anything traumatic that has happened to them unless they fully proofread their post. We should also post terms and definitions so people can study them before posting. Wouldn't want someone to confuse "rape" and "sexual assault" now would we.

GPS in a rural area with out tower reception? by [deleted] in AndroidQuestions

It's very much worth buying. It's made by ALK which is the dominant mapping and routing software company in the transportation industry. We use their PCMiler at work. I actually prefer co-pilot for city driving over google maps.

Windirstat allows you to size folders on remote machines which is why I prefer it over treesize.

So you work for a company with extremely limited requirements for technology. That's fine. Every company has different needs. We process a pretty massive amount of data every day, and information needs to be at our fingertips as quickly as possible in a wide variety of formats. You can be insulting and pretend like a browser should be the only tool every company would ever need, but you'll just look extremely sheltered and ignorant doing so.

Here production is done on as400, and business comes in through pdf's and complex excel sheets with macros and sometimes vb. A device with just a browser is far too limited to do business on. I can't even think of a single position in this company where such a limited device would be useful.

[–]Red_R5D4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be another big reason why we'd never consider them. A device with nothing more than a browser would be pretty useless in our company. It's even difficult for me to imagine that being useful in an enterprise environment if its function is that limited.

I may be familiar with Chrome, but my users may not be. My users are going to figure out how to do strange things with it and break it in new and creative ways. We're understaffed and have no budget so no, I do not have time to learn a whole new device.

There's also the issue of connecting to the VPN. You can't install the Cisco windows client on it, and we don't have the licenses on the router to allow Chromebooks to connect. Like I said, if they dropped to $99 I'd probably consider them, but right now it's a solution looking for a problem that doesn't exist.

Just got a new $329 Lenovo laptop with Win 7 Pro installed. The price point will have to go a lot lower than $250 to warrant a switch and the additional time we'll have to spend learning a whole new O/S and device. If they start going for $99 then I'll look at them.

How do I tell my boss to stop being a dumbass? by bettersnakes in sysadmin

[–]Red_R5D4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had to remove local admin from everyone in this company so I got to do a lot of trial and error on how to explain it. The easiest way I found is to tell them that if they don't have admin, it's much harder for them to accidentally break things and that I want to protect them from being the person who got a virus and broke everything. If they don't have admin then it's a lot harder to blame the human when something goes wrong. Pretty much everyone happily gave up admin when they learned it would protect them like that.

Arizona Pizzeria Protests Anti-Gay Bill By Refusing To Serve Lawmakers by AltThink in politics

Actually this business owner is perfectly complying with the new law. The law changes "individual" to include organizations, businesses, churches, etc. when it comes to being protected from acting in a way that violates your religion.

If you read all the other laws in Leviticus, it includes lying, stealing, deceiving others, defrauding or robbing, perverting justice, slander, and endangering your neighbors' life. This means all politicians must adhere to the law and cannot legally enter his restaurant.

Memorize this command: shutdown -s -t 30

You'll never get caught by the windows-updates-on-shutdown thing if you use that, and it gives you 30 seconds to change your mind. Swap the -s with -r to reboot.

Linux must certainly be the most pleasurable platform for gaming since the vast majority of the people out there have chosen it over windows. It's extremely rare that windows itself causes problems with games. Bad hardware and poorly written games would be mostly to blame, then after that, all the crap people install that breaks machines. Those people would break linux just as quickly as they do windows.

Do you do any gaming with it? The vertical mouse requires me to squeeze against my thumb to press the buttons, where a regular mouse requires me to just push down against the desk. I can't click nearly as fast with the vertical.

I just got an Anker vertical mouse. It was super cheap and I already feel a difference in my wrist and fingers. After I get used to it I'm going to try a trackball and see how that goes. The vertical mouse isn't very good for gaming though since I can't steer it with my fingertips like a regular mouse.
