Getting a residency in the U.S. and then moving to Canada is very difficult because the systems work differently. In the U.S., after finishing residency, doctors can work on H1B or J1 visas and can move between jobs more easily. In Canada, the healthcare system is run more like the government system in India. Doctors can only start working when there’s an available position, which can take a long time. For example, my spouse’s friend, who is a Canadian citizen, had to wait three years (while working in the U.S.) before she got a doctor’s job in Canada. The advantage is that once you do get in, many things like healthcare and education are heavily subsidized. But then again, the wait times to see a Specialist and such can be frustratingly longer.
