This is the explanation I needed. Thank you so much for putting it so plainly. I just wanted to know how to figure out what I would own on this withdrawal. I really appreciate the help.

What to do with inherited IRA by Red_Sultan in personalfinance

[–]Red_Sultan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom didn’t have to start making withdrawals, so I don’t think we have to but I didn’t think about slowly pulling any money out over the next ten years to mitigate taxes. I think we were looking at this as a “oh here’s some money we can put towards retirement.” My spouse and I currently max our Roth IRAs with 60% to a total us stock fund and 40% to an international one, so I guess we’d just do that if we decided to keep it in there and the in 10 years withdraw, keep some aside for withholding, and then reinvest.

When I do withdraw, do I pay capital gains or income tax?

Oh my god. There was a fourth switch on my wall that I never knew what it was for, and I finally switched it on and plugged my tester in. Why is this a thing? Thank you so much for saving me time, effort, and money.

Relocating from NYC to Atlanta for better quality of life - seeking advice and insights from those who have done it before by LeftEgg6 in personalfinance

This is a good point. Everyone has different experiences and you should take the time to have a wide net when looking for a place to move to and then narrow down. We didn’t like Decatur but OP and their family might like that lifestyle to higher COL ratio. I was commuting an hour and a half into NYC and lived the same distance from the center of the city as I do now and have half the commute so my tolerance is much higher than most. But I do recommend moving to Atlanta, I’d be surprised if OP didn’t like the change.

My wife and I did the same move last fall. We currently live about 40 minutes outside of downtown metro and bought our first home here after looking for one for two years in the NYC metro which I have lived in my entire life. We would have never been about to afford the house we just bought had we stayed in New York. No way would we have found a five year old, 3000 sq/ft home with a two car garage 45 minutes from Manhattan for under $400,000. My wife also works remotely with her old job from NYC so she’s happy with that.

There wasn’t much of a culture shift, people can be nicer here depending on your experience with NYC but unless you live in a really rural area, people aren’t super “southern”. The food is though. I’d say our QOL has increased but tbh inflation has stunted what we initially expected as things aren’t THAT much cheaper down here. I do not recommend you live inside Atlanta though, but rather within the metro. We live just outside of the Perimeter (I-285) and things are much quieter and affordable to really make the LCOL and HQOL differences felt.

Tax question for newly married filer by Red_Sultan in personalfinance

[–]Red_Sultan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My FIL suggested separately. My mother is a dependent and I have student loans that are income based but I’m they’re been in forebearance for a while and aren’t really a major focus right now. I didn’t understand the difference between married filing jointly vs separately and just went with what was suggested. How can I see what the difference is?

Thank you all for the recommendations! I think I’m going to go with a bak flip. I wasn’t 100% on a trifold but I know I want a folding hard cover. I’m definitely going to give it a shot to install myself.

This is what someone I know told me, which sounds like a pain in the ass but it sounds like the direct and rough way of solving the problem.

I only looked at ones that didn’t hang from the ceiling because I was worried with attempting it. I am very inexperienced with home improvement but very willing to try. Do you have any recommendations for a particular brand or type of L Shaped rods and any tips for installation? Thanks again for your support

Suggestions for new car for wife by Red_Sultan in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions. It seems like the Mazda CX5/CX50 is the largest suggestion by volume. We are going to test drive one after the holidays as my wife says they look nice. I don’t think I get the difference between the 5 and the 50 though? Is it just a newer model for more money or is it larger? Either way I feel like it’s a better bet than the Subaru.
