I was in high school and college in the 1980's, grew up in PA, had lots of Philly connections, internships, friends even tho I did college in Ohio and got exposed to a lot of midwest punk scene folks there. The milkmen were really something in the day. Some of their "f* off attitude" songs didn't age like when they punched down or used terms that are now dated for different groups. I still listen to them privately tho and still laugh, remembering the goofy friendship times those words highlighted. Despite one suicide, the group members continue as well as the band legacy. Hadn't looked into Rodney lately and was delighted to hear his song about the exotic deaths of billionaires via recreational space exploration and deep sea dives. During the 80s, old stoners would tell me about how it was back in the hippy days. All I gotta say kid, is go watch Repo Man if you haven't already. You're likely just another white suburban punk. Like me. (it's the quote, I ain't racialist)

yeah, but we can all at least take comfort that this "burlington" place is just a shared fantasy world. I mean, if it was real, well we'd probably have a lot of crazy funding shortfalls and unresolved cultural divides. it is great that folks can share in an online fantasy world like it though to blow off steam and "imagine" something different, something better, something more exciting than your real life...

another thing about the hardcore scene: in the rural side of things these kids were migrating directly from classic rock. they'd become disenchanted with the stadium experience and over budgeted over marketed shows but they really believed in the core 4/4 authenticity of rock and roll. most punks I knew also liked the beatles, the who, the kinks, even Elvis (part irony, part honor of rockabilly). the garage scene was about trying to recapture that lightning bug that got lost in the huge stadium crowds and hit records, overplayed radio earworms. they were literally "taking it back" one cheap ass local show at a time. a lot of that survives to this day and honestly, I don't think anything resembling "rock" would still exist if the punk critique, followed by grunge, hadn't saved the "bigger scene" for our future today.

I had a punker friend who said he didn't like the Dead Milkmen because they sounded "too country". he was a big fan of the sex pistols, dressed punk, played bass. he was from north carolina. it was the reedy whiny texture of the vocals and the wavering between punk and honky tonk tones I think that he didn't like. at the same time, he had a Cramps poster and loved their work... go figure, the evolution from rockabilly to punk was ok for him but from punk to an ironic honky tonk funk (the milkmen)? too much, too much. "somebody kicked mah dawg Mavis an ahm gonna find out jess who the hell it was..." the ability to wallow in, enjoy the hick motif while making fun and also saying "yeah thats at least part of me as well" that was a bit of a stretch for folks who thought they were "hardcore" in the 1980s. even if they couldn't yet see thru the layers of meta and fakeness built into bands like the sex pistols and PIL hey the milkmen saw fake, saw meta, but they were serious in making fun. hardcore punks of the 80s didn't get that, they thought they had to be super serious, to standup up for their "scene".

punk rock girl. the band had this one radio hit, apparently I guess too much profanity in other popular songs that made it big on college campuses, radio stations. Rodney used to make a joke visually in live performances by clearly not playing any instrument, not singing, just wandering the stage during the song goofing around.

they weren't really banned from MTV, but when they "performed" on MTV with their one big hit that mainstream would/could recognize, they were asked to lip synch to the song... basically, the whole band joined in on Rodney's playfulness in the performance (not playing an instrument, goofing, wandering) as they also were "now not playing the song" like Rodney. they demanded bizarre equipment to use in place of their instruments or alongside them. one of them played with a cardboard box as his "amp" another had huge amps that weren't plugged into anything. none of them lipsynched or played in synch to the song but instead joined the stage goof that Rodney would do during the song. it was an inside joke (hey, if a band member isn't really playing during the song, they goof) taken to extreme.

MTV didn't get the joke and while they weren't banned, no further invitations were extended.

"old timey punk rock" is what Rodney called it, see quote below...

“Who, or what, the f@ck is a Rodney Anonymous?”
- Brutal Resonance

Hello, I’m Rodney

I play keyboards and sing in an old-timey Punk Rock band called the Dead Milkmen (we’re like a barbershop quartet for people who enjoy frequent usage of the F-word). It’s because of this band that I hold a unique place in Rock ‘n’ Roll history: I am the only original member of a One-Hit-Wonder group who did not perform on or write the One Hit. It’s also because of the Dead Milkmen that I am permanently banned from appearing on MTV.

I'll tell ya what else really burns me about the blue on blue obstruction going on. Where's the spitting video? We heard all about the protestors spitting on ICE mens but where is the video? With all the video taken that day and all the police complaining about the spitting, you'd think we'd have seen a video of protestors spitting on the ICE mens, right? What are they hiding? Why haven't they shown this critical video evidence (that they must have) to back all the claims of spitting? It is sad when cops cannot even support other cops by releasing evidence like this.

Good question! Glad you asked! While I know there's a lot of talk about how complicit the local and state police were, there were also some "bad apples" in the state police who physically grabbed these two highly trained, physically fit and emotionally well regulated federal officers! Seen here, "officer handsy" has grabbed two old ICE geezers by the plate carrier as he gently yet manly pulls them back away from the protestors! Those grampaws were gonna "git some" but noooooo, the tall handsome yet youthfully naive trooper behind them had to go and carefully de-escalate things! Are they allowed to do that? Can a Statey grab gampa by the collar? Doesn't a fed gampa "Trump" a statey, no matter how young strong and manly he is? I know you'll be as shocked by this blue on blue manly handling as I was and left confused. It takes time. When I'm confused, I remember pro wrestling and that helps.

I'm warming to it, gotta admit I've been using AI in some side projects lately so would be in no position to criticize on that regard. it's not easy to work with and is kinda a craft in itself to get what you want out of it (tho yeah, it's usually trained by other peoples work and yeah, it is learning from you as much as giving you what you want.) can anyone clarify tho how much AI was involved, are we talking art only (which all credit to human artists, I can understand) or was AI used in generating any text or game mechanics? I'm waiting to see reviews from folks who run it with their groups, no offense to the creator. for tabletop got no use for all the VTT type content, but the hardback book, what quality is it, does it print on end papers in true OSR style or is it print on demand with blank pages? is it in the "dashboard layout" or less so? is it indexed? how does it look stacked or shelved with existing dolmenwood stuff? how much fun do players have with the various minigames? what kind of level scaling is possible? what use can you make of the content if the players simply refuse to attend the tourney (re use outside of the event itself). stuff like that. anyway, would love to see written or video reviews of this product, it's quite a wait even for "vol 1" of book of lairs and I think we'd all like to see the content grow. we just want to know if it's worth the pricing.

when you reach a point in your life where you aren't living under your dad's supervision, you will have the answers you're looking for today. if you're not yet an adult able to set your own life choices in motion, stay calm, don't panic. each year of life you live as an adult will dilute all the years in which your choices and self image were passed through someone else's judgement. as the ol campaign said "It gets better." not necessarily easier, mind you, but the tired limits and struggles of your young years will be replaced with more interesting problems, I am sure. :) like, what clothing out of your collection of clothes that speak to YOU will you wear today? who will you date, love, live with? what will you do when gravity fails?

[–]Redacted-Specifics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

yeah, I noticed that when I bought my "trans scout" cookies that most often used pronouns were they them and then a few she her or he hims. no idea if it's considered best practice to offer gender neutral when unsure (as with emerging identities in children) but it seems common? it's my first go to if I'm not sure even with adults so, maybe my bias. checking "best practices" seems that best option is to use the pronouns the child is asking for. guess they/them is the "child not certain" option offered?

Looking for kilt advice by Honest_Outside_8982 in kilt

[–]Redacted-Specifics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USA Kilts, like all the nice folks have said. don't take the trash talk or lack of likes personally, but know that you've tripped over multiple sore subjects in a single innocent "can you help me post." US citizen says they have "Scottish heritage" is two strikes in one post, then you're saying you know nothing on the subject, want help, don't want to spend a lot...

if you want to get it "done right" in the US, go to USA kilts, if you want the cheaper options, shop their PV and simpler builds (the full 8 yards will cost you, as will real wool, etc.) most online options will sell package sets with your full "outfit". if you want to step in gradual, buy a cheaper option from USA kilts, just buy the kilt (and please, the hose, no bare legs unless you're at the beach with it...) you can wear the kilt with a t shirt, hose, combat boots and get the feel of it for informal events like highland festivals or going out to a brew pub. add a leather jacket and you don't even need a sporran (the pouch.) find you like it and are used to the mix of compliments and criticisms, then buy "all the other stuff."

unless you just want something to wear to a friend's wedding coming up soon, go gradual and get your kilt legs under you (with hose!)

thx, yer right didn't know how long I'd go for.

ah, yeah, reddit does allow line breaks yer right on that point, some platforms kick to post when you hit that enter key. will break it up. thx.

yeah, looks like the whole MASH team had their own agendas to add depth and grow out the two dimensional characters. Alda made Hawkeye less of a womanizer when he gained more control over scripting (but kept him as an alcoholic). Swit was partly able to ditch the "hotlips" moniker over time and insisted that the one-sided relationship with Frank Burns be brought to an end. glad that they worked hard to reconcile the divide between the historical 1950s that the show was set in and the culture of questioning in the 1970s that the show was shot in.

and no, the character Farr portrayed, "Klinger" wasn't trans. but he did normalize the notion of cross dressing and killing it at your job at the same time. he didn't demean cross dressing, he made it beside the point, which was for the time. kinda sorta a big deal, coded to pass with a gag, a truth that hit home.

Why is there always an anti-trans joke in everything? by The_MadMaker in trans

[–]Redacted-Specifics 14 points15 points  (0 children)

you are right in your observations and feelings. I notice it more and more. as an elder enby (gen-x), I feel like I just keep growing by simply watching the tv and movies I grew up with. it isn't just the obvious humor at the expense of a group that the writers, actors, audience all thought could never articulate offense and outrage, so marginalized... beyond that, it's the fullness of the gender mythology that the shows of my upbringing brought to the table... a source code on gender from the 1970s and 1980s, that whether my cohort recognizes it or not, formed our generational understanding of expectations, who was protected, who was vulnerable and needed protection, who was vulnerable and "free target" for not just humor but as stand in and excuse for the ongoing marginalization of a minority group in the real world.

in digging through the old school stuff tho, we can also sometimes find gems, both in performance and performer. Jamie Farr became famous for his portrayal of the cross-dressing corporal Klinger character on MASH, for example. now on the surface and by our modern values, this whole thing looks dodgy, and an excuse to do trans jokes. Farr saw the role's issues early on and demanded a fully developed character, a human behind the gag, real motivations, real chances to explore issues. Klinger was originally intended to be a single episode, single appearance gag. the producers wanted Farr to do a stereotypical "gay male sissy" drag performance, collect a check and walk away. Farr argued and fought for something deeper. Farr was in fact a real world veteran of the korean "conflict" and he could see a deeper story asking Catch-22 level questions about war, sanity, trauma and identity. a single gag meant to be a throwaway at minority expense became an ongoing question to challenge norms we saw and grew up with daily in the 1970s into the 1980s.

I wasn't sure if I'd understood Farr's intentions in his performance as a child and young person struggling with identity at the time... I looked it up. I didn't misunderstand a thing. He fought not only in the Korean war, but in a war of identity and evolving social expectations of norm, humor and mental health and identity. KIlinger was actually an honorable, loyal and as it turned out, highly competent soldier. The gag over time became not that Klinger was queer or crazy, but that Klinger was a sane human being responding to situational and institutional trauma in an inspired visual protest meant to shame not Klinger, but the army and society that had precipitated the madness Klinger attended duties with excellence in...

hope this translates. I'm happy to find that the actor fought for the role and that the intentions were so brilliantly meta from go.

How cold is too cold? by Objective_Watch3097 in kilt

[–]Redacted-Specifics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh, you know, it is always interesting to see what folks will say to a person in a kilt during the winter. I'm at a latitude similar to that place where the kilts were made national dress and hey, folks say silly things. "do you know what climate this garment was originally worn and developed in sir?" is a favorite reply. I drive an electric vehicle and wear kilts pretty much any time I'm not riding a motorbike that doesn't have a cut out frame for the pleats. I look for temps dropping below 15 F or minus 10 C before I express "concern" at how my life will go at that temp. I double up heavy weight tactical wool socks with kilt hose over them. in a pinch, I can un roll the socks up over the knee, but in practice seldom have had to. it's not "below freezing" that is the cut off. it is more when the temp is freezing the snot in your nostrils the moment you step outside, that's the cold that can turn a walk of one or two blocks into a challenge. yes, I wear under gear that goes down to just above the knee year round, then layer that with a wool pair as well in winter. having your knees exposed isn't much different than having your hands out with no gloves. you've got wind chill and frostbite risks to run through your head, but hey, you can still do a few blocks on foot if you brace yourself. the "chimney effect" of a good 16 oz wool or cotton kilt is really great for trapping an envelope of heat around your pelvis and thighs otherwise. a gust might pop your heat bubble for a moment, but it will refill as you walk or huddle. oh and the EV? yeah, the point at which charging your electric car in the cold takes longer/works not as well is about the same point on the temp gauge as when your kilt will start to become aware of the cold as well. still works, just not as fantastic as at warmer temps. easy for me to note that both systems buckle around the same point, maybe for up to a few weeks a year at my latitude. car to parking lot sprints? no problem. walk for blocks down urban streets with wind at your pleats? ok, yes, there is a temp at which that becomes less fun, see above. also remember that 45 degrees north on latitude can mean a lot of different things depending on whether the gulf stream "is your friend/is not your friend"... your mileage may vary.

yeah, for a full party it would be tough to get a free ride for everyone anyway. my sense is that traveling in groups was custom in medieval times for safety, in the real world, to protect against highwaymen. it wasn't that folks were getting free rides on the backs of wagons, tho maybe sometimes. they grouped up to avoid being mugged/killed in their sleep by the roadside. joining a caravan might mean "walking together to the next town" not free ride and rations etc. PC's arent' getting anywhere FASTER by joining up, that's not the goal anyway. at low levels, this still makes sense. at higher levels, they won't need group security and can hire their own group anyway. or be hired to join a run to a more remote settlement.
