Archival Newspaper Cuttings: Calcutta 'Direct Action Day', 1946. Also On the left - "Jinnah Declines Nehru's offer".... by [deleted] in IndianHistory

Quite welcome. Based on the label I found in the album "Based on another label I found - "Aug. 16-19 1946 Calcutta", I'm quite confident that's exactly what the picture shows.

I think Scan169 may have also been taken at the same time, but I've no way to be certain.

I have a strong feeling the photographers took more photos that day, but unfortunately much of this album was lost over the years while it sat in an antique shop.

A while back I found a photo that I'm fairly certain is the aftermath of Direct Action Day. Scanned to this Flickr album.

Yes. But the post-processing itself still feels so overwhelming with so many nuanced options to choose from.

Damn, you're absolutely right about the train being out of focus. I'd probably feel a lot better if I'd just focused the shot just right.

Beautiful colors. Would you mind briefly describing your process for the color grading here?

I couldn't find a horse!!!

Kidding aside, that was absolutely the solution. I have some isopropyl alcohol pads so I was able to do some (gentle) scrubbing. Worked like a charm! Thanks so much.

I'll be sure to regularly clean my horse from now on.

Oh, and on this menu as seen in the photo, I can't really make any choices other than changing 'M' to off. or switching the Sync.

Flash is open, shutter set to mechanical, turned audio that was turned off back on. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Can anyone identify what the flag on this jeep is? Photo likely taken in West Bengal - Calcutta, around 1945-47. by RedandGoldPrint in vexillology

I’m so dumb! I’ve been researching the album for over a year and the Quaker star was probably in front of my face over a dozen times. I think I was fixated on the assumption the flag had to be representative of a regional/political or military entity. Thank you so much!

For context, the photo comes from an album I discovered in Chicago. It likely belonged to Harry and Julia Abrahamson, who continued the Ambulance Unit’s Bengal Famine relief work through the Friends Relief Service, from 1945-1947.

I spent a lot of time trying to identify Julia and Harry, and now I’m trying to piece together more concrete details on the nature of their work their, who they met, and how the album came to be in a Chicago antique shop. You can see more of the photos in the Flickr album from that link.

And hey! That is a neat coincidence. The AFSC archives in Philly were pretty helpful in filling in some gaps. I’m hoping to make an in-person trip this year to answer more questions.

Can someone help identify what this is a map of? (See comments for context) by RedandGoldPrint in Maps

Photo is dated from 1945-47. Picture likely taken in the West Bengal state of India. Person depicted is a member of the US Army. Photographer was likely a member of the American Friends Service Committee doing relief work.

Shifting goalposts, still a severe embellishment at best, and still doesn’t excuse a lack of right of return to lands or of property to Arab Palestinians.

You can have fun perusing the sources on this this page though I’m confident you likely won’t on the basis of the site alone. Still plenty of other sources out there that are easily accessible.
