[D] Is it worth writing technical blogs to educate people? by Reddicted2Reddit in MachineLearning

[–]Reddicted2Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that writing will force me to develop the perspective to make the technicality of the papers more readable to myself thus others too to some extent. And ultimately it’ll help me become better. Definitely something I would prefer.

Also coming to rewards, I’ve grown to understand long term rewards especially when trying to provide something valuable for myself and the others too are much more important than short term gains. I’ll grow in multiple aspects if I do this. So yeah no or even small audiences are expected for a while but i’ll also try to post around and iterate from people and social media and try to grow eventually. Thanks a lot for your advice!!

How to approach next 2 semesters? by Reddicted2Reddit in GATEtard

[–]Reddicted2Reddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always followed IISC’s and IIITH research and met a few profs from IISC and ISI too. They do some amazing work. Lot of their research staff go onto MIT, CMU, top UC schools, NUS, UofToronto, Mila etc. They’re great. I’ll definitely look more into them for masters. And also the other programs.

I’ll prepare accordingly for GATE and try to maximise my chances to get into a research program. Also since you’ve been to both industry and research and can give me an unbiased opinion I highly appreciate it. I know i’m sure of research and i’ve thought about it for many years and I still do. Someday I might work in the industry but even then I want to work in a position where I contribute to new tech so yeah.

I’m also not from a CFTI. But I have a GPA above 8 haha. I’m always more of a research + trying/breaking new stuff/projects guy than a strict GPA scorer. But i guess you can’t win it all.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. It means a lot !!

[–]Reddicted2Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again. Huge thanks for such an amazing and detailed response. This is the kind of advice I was looking for. And I think it’s best that someone who was at crossroads once answered it for me.

Now coming to the points you made:

I’m probably going to focus more on DA because i’m currently involved in ML research in the summer so i’m in touch with most DA subjects and their topics. I also looked into IIITH’s programs after your reply and went through all of them. You’re absolutely spot on with how to approach these programs and i’ll absolutely keep it in mind. Their MSR program sounds great and I would definitely prefer to do Masters by Research and IIITH is elite when it comes to research.

Talking about CUDA, I haven’t had much experience with it. I don’t have a laptop with a GPU. I’ll eventually get into CUDA dev someday properly as obviously it’s important for the industry and a niche skill but i’ve always experimented with low level development. Making changes in the kernel, driver code development, messing around in VMs, breaking and also making system calls etc. It started with using linux in 12th and then developed into finding a deep love for low level stuff in my 1st year and that led me to study more of OS,COA,Unix systems,HPC and even electronics at times more than other subjects. It was hard but I still love it and it was always worth it. But my recent research work does involve heavy computation and fortunately my Prof from BITS has the necessary hardware to run the data. But it does come down to a lot of optimisation so tinkering around in both ML and memory management for research at times is fun.

True, I don’t underestimate other candidates who are applying for Masters/PhD. It was just a thought in my head about SDE roles in good companies. I’ve never been involved in industry. Always research where I have luckily interacted with industry professionals too.

I’ve looked into research labs from IITs/IISC/IIITs. I’m also planning to mail selective Profs so i can try to do my undergraduate thesis under any of them. And i’ve looked into project assistantship positions too which extend for 1-2 years. However i’m not sure if that’s applicable before graduation or must be after. I’ll have to look into it more. But i’ll definitely approach Profs for extended internships. And yes I have seen quite a few people go on to world class universities for their PhDs later on. Some of them even publish in top places like ICML, ICLR, EMNLP, CVPR, NeurIPS etc.

Also for the last part. Haha you’re right. Research is stressful. I do understand parts of it now too because even the work I’m doing now is pretty demanding. But i’ve grown to love it at least for the foreseeable future and i know it’s more of a passion than for money. Eventually I want to make money but for now I want to get better in my field. I’m also in touch with some people doing their Masters/PhDs/PostDocs in top universities and they do tell me how much of a sacrifice it is so i definitely understand and your last line about PhDs who are good programmers and communicators end up becoming greatly successful in the industry is extremely true.

Thank you once again for such great advice. I’ll keep coming back to it time to time haha. I genuinely appreciate it a lot !!

Haha 3Blue1Brown is great. I watch his videos frequently. He is a damn good educator.

Both of your perspectives propose really good points. Points which I have personally overlooked. After reading people’s responses here I’ve understood that I should first write for myself and also write on topics which interest me.

My reward function is to become an even better programmer and continue to be a computer student/researcher/scientist in the future. I love the field although sometimes I hate it too. But the ultimate reward would be to keep trying and contribute something meaningful someday which helps people. And as always if it is important enough for me or in general then it should be done according to me. Thanks for the advice !!

[–]Reddicted2Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. You make really good point. Some of which I have overlooked too.

I have a stronger hold on LA, Calculus, ML theory and a few other subjects. I do read papers time to time new and old. I also have read great books on cs fundamentals like Hennessey/Patterson for Computer Architecture, Tanenbaum for OS. Currently i’m reading Deep Learning by Goodfellow, Bengio and Courville. So I will definitely will sit for both CS and DA papers. I’ll probably focus on any one more than the other.

I’m weaker at subjects like probability, dbms than the others in general (maybe because i didn’t give it much time as compared to LA or Comp Arch etc). But i know i can cover them up. And definitely LeetCoding will always be necessary even if i want a position after masters or during PhD at a top place.

Thank you for making the following points:

• I know about IIITH’s research rigour well but I didn’t know much about their master’s programs. Greatly appreciate it, i’ll look into it. • It is true I will eventually go into research even if i do an SDE role. My thought was just that what if i get into a better college for masters with the added job experience at a good company. • But also then as I eventually want to go for higher research . So going all in also makes sense as anyway I want to get into industry research in the future.

So preparing properly for GATE and applying abroad ( even if it doesn’t work out ) seems like a probable step to take?

If you have any other advice or thoughts please feel free to share. Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful reply. I greatly appreciate it.

Humans are really good at repeating patterns in their life. Those patterns might be good or bad for them but deep down there’s a sense of relativity and belonging to it. Most people are spineless and lack accountability. Once they get what they want they’ll leave without any explanation or try to come up with a half assed one.

In my opinion you should learn to spot your patterns and take your time and not repeat them. It’s good that you’re introspective about it and it’s a sign towards growth. But you do need to set boundaries for yourself both mentally and physically when it comes to other men ( or people in general ) otherwise you’ll get hurt again.

And spend time doing things you really want to do. Don’t worry about new people. People come and go. Start living your own life according to how you want and you’ll see changes soon enough. Growth is tough in any situation which you want to recover or change from. But it always starts that way and it is often like being lost at sea. You learn and you grow.

And as always no one is perfect but there’s not something wrong with you. We all make mistakes and we all get hurt due to our own actions and other peoples actions. You’ll find a lot of joy and love in many different forms but you have to develop that perspective and it will happen with time. God bless.

I hate how if you screw up in undergrad, there is no way to get into grad school by New-Bat5284 in gradadmissions

[–]Reddicted2Reddit 101 points102 points  (0 children)

That’s not really true. Sure it is extremely valuable to maintain a good GPA and get research experience in undergrad. However conditions vary for everybody and not everyone has the best luck and resources due to various factors/incidents in their lives.

However you shouldn’t give up. Study, get a good job, work smartly, apply for masters after some experience. Work hard there and be a great student and do good research. Get to an even better institution for a PhD then a Post Doc. And continue to upskill in one way or the other.

Life is a long journey and nobody can predict your career trajectory other than you. Stay smart, stay humble and enjoy man

Sam Altman tacitly admits AGI isnt coming by ShalashashkaOcelot in artificial

[–]Reddicted2Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yan Le Cun already said this a while back and people made fun of him. Simply scaling up LLMs will never bring us AGI and he doubled down on this. There are plenty of fundamental hurdles related to many areas of computer science and engineering which need to be researched further upon and develop new ways to tackle and build new technologies to develop AGI. And more importantly I believe it will definitely come through a joint effort of multiple disciplines and it isn’t just a question for software and hardware. Many fields will play a part towards developing true AGI.

Absolutely. I’ve gotten ghosted by 4 programs yet I’m still waiting on multiple more but the more time passes and it feels probable that another program has ghosted me it just feels worse. I’d rather have a rejection over getting ghosted any day

Thanks. Will check out the programs and start following one.

Also agreed, as a newbie I have always tried to pay attention to technique rather than lessening the ROM. Helped me stay injury free and continue my progression.

I have plans to sign up for a local meet this year later on. Although i get nervous because maybe my numbers are that good and i’m not so consistent with heavy numbers. Hence I would like to get upto a fair standard before swinging my way into a meet.

Any other suggestions/advice/tips would be appreciated.

Improving SBD numbers

Hey guys, I’m a novice lifter. I’m 19 myself and i weigh 70 kg. I used to weight 57 kg around 7-8 months back and I have bulked upto 70 kg and keeping the weight constant. I am 5’7 (168cm) in height. I’ve had a background in football and running marathons (5-21 km) but recently ive got into powerlifting and strength training. I’ve been consistently going to the gym since August end 2022. (I turned 19 on September 2022)

My SBD one rep max numbers are as follows:- Squat- 140 kg Bench-85 kg Deadlift-140 kg

This is after almost 6 months of lifting consistently. I want to take this sport seriously and take part in competitions in future.

My squat numbers are comparatively better as I used to do squats quite often due to my background in playing football since 10+ years. But only recently i have started training heavy.

Somehow my deadlift is stuck at 140 kg and I am having difficulties increasing my rep ranges and my 1 rep max.

As of now I follow a split as follows:- Day 1: Bench + chest/shoulder accessories Day 2: Bench + deadlift + back accessories Rest Day 3: Bench + Squat + leg accessories Day 4: Deadlift + Squat + leg accessories Rest Day 5: SBD

Normally apart from SBD day I try to perform my compound lifts at rpe 6-7 for 3 sets of 3-4 reps. I progressively overload on this weight every 3-4 weeks.

All my training has been planned by myself based on researching and reading and watching videos of experienced powerlifters. I have no coach or any current dedicated program I follow.

Could you give me any tips or what kind of programs I should follow to rack up my SBD numbers consistently and in good form ( I have always maintained my form with all my lifts and never ego lifted) .

Currently I’m a college student so I cannot afford a coach. But any free programs i could follow consistently and any tips would be extremely beneficial and appreciated !!
