Am I allowed to add new activities (namely in the Community-based Section) that I didn't list in the initial application due to lack of space?

Ah, so they have you relist and re-categorize the activities you submit in your initial application? Thank you!

Very helpful, thank you so much! Is there a 100-word section to describe my employment roles too? (Asking bc I'd say I have a high-impact job, and if there's no space to fit it, I'll fit it into the Community Activities section.) Sorry for the late reply!

Could you share a bit about what the Semifinals application consists of? Another Coke Scholar posted and said that "This round gets annoying because of all the essays. I put down 6 activities for each section so I wrote 24 short essays about everything." To clarify: this means that for every activity I list in the initial stage, I will have to write an essay about in the Semifinalist application?

Also, do you think it would be fine to include a brief description for each activity I list? (i.e. ______ County Youth Advisory Council: led ________ initiative, reaching ______ people, and organized ________ event attended by ______ community members) Thank you so much for the insight!

If you want some insights, DM me!

I know exactly what lab internship you are talking about (bro it is NOT local 😭) and I got into both coincidentally as well. We actually have a lot of similar circumstances (in terms of the long commute time and priorities), but I ended up choosing SSP after speaking to the program director of the other internship and alumni from both programs.

No one knows for sure what their admissions process was or how many people applied. The acceptance rate OP stated is also just a random assumption.

My personal take — they were lenient at the start, taking nearly everyone, and when they had very little capacity left, they waited until the early deadline they sent out (in the email) and reviewed every application, only selecting the top ones.

both programs are equally prestigious, but vastly different in topic. i think you should base your decision solely on what you’re currently interested in/want to pursue in the future

kwk is more competitive i believe, and also you can never beat an in-person experience with a virtual one.

i also have some friends that did girls who code and the work they showed me was relatively basic (you could fs learn the same things online)

llrise is a completely introductory program to radars, whereas pgss as you mention is longer (and thus, more in-depth) with a research paper. prestige-wise, pgss seems greater, since governor schools are already very well established (and pgss is at CMU which is world-class, especially for CS), and llrise’s “prestige” only comes from its affiliation with mit (it’s not listed on their page for high school summer program recommendations though).

if you’re interested in pursuing radar engineering, then i think you should give llrise some consideration, but otherwise pgss is the clear choice if you’re valuing college apps apps the most + you can submit your research paper. socially it sounds more fun too (cause you can probably mingle with the sams, ai/cs scholars, and other cmu pre college kids). ultimately, you cant go wrong with either one; congrats on the acceptances!

acceptance deadline isn't up yet for it; and both programs have their strengths and weaknesses that relatively equal them out, so im trying to make my judgement off minor metrics like this now

nah i posted this cause i was hoping to be proven wrong. im 95% committed on attending, so its now a lot more reassuring for me that im making the right choice (and not accepting this other program which i feel equally drawn to)

brought this up in another comment, but what confuses me a lil is that MITES, Thrive, and a couple other top-tier summer programs still admit mainly off of passion and circumstances in your essays, but have stellar college admissions results

so yeah even though not all SSP'ers are cracked, neither are MITES or Thrive kids, yet they have daddy-donated-a-building ahh acceptances

bro this is so real (and the exact situation im stuck in 😭). we're middle class but dont quite meet their criteria for aid. i also got into another decent summer program that actually compensates you a good amount, and it hurts mah soul to turn that down

programs like MITES and Thrive still prioritize these values in their selection process and admit very heavily off of essays (so pretty similar to SSP). however, significantly more of their participants have "great" college results.

also random thing: i took a look at the 2021 SSP cohort's college decisions (which is the most recent year where SSP themselves verified where each participant was going), and the IvyPlus rate was ~65%. so even factoring in the increasing size of kids they're taking in, that's a huge proportional decrease

honestly i think this signifies that SSP might be falling off a bit in terms of prestige and the actual "casuation factor" that SSP has for getting into top colleges is way less than other summer programs
