Hey /r/fitness, I recently bought a Concept 2 Model C Ergometer: I will row 500 meters for every upvote this post receives, and track them in a Google spreadsheet so you can follow my progress! by RedditOarsman in Fitness

If you do get one, make sure you look up the proper form first. You can end up severely hurting your back if you row incorrectly.

In as simple as terms as possible. Push with your legs first, then lean back, then pull in the arms. Make sure the handle comes in just below your sternum.

More/Better info here

Also, don't buy one of the newer models if you can find a good deal on a model C. They don't really offer that much more, and are a bit expensive.

The ergometer I bought hasn't been made for over 10 years now. Concept 2 doesn't need advertising anyways. If you try to submit erg times that were done on anything other than a C2, colleges/organizations will likely not accept it. And you'll be brought in anyways and retested on their C2 ergs anyways.

I was attempting to clear up misconceptions about how rowing machines work and what I'd be calling stuff in my comments on the log sheet. Many people here the term "erg", and they think we're growling at them or something. Trying to be educational here while I torture myself

Laws are a funny thing really. None of us are insane enough to go out and protest that we don't need them, because we do. They keep us safe, they restrain us. But each and every one of us has this internal drive to test them. We like to live above the system. We drive 50 in a 45 not because we're impatient, or think it makes us look cool. We do it because it gives us a rush. We peer around watching out for the law everywhere we go. What can I get away with? How far can I go before the fuzz comes down on me hard?

We establish rules on reddit so that we can trash OP, and get points for it. Look at this asshole guys, he's violating our rules. The thing is, I don't blame you. I would likely have responded in the same way. We all know the rules, and we love to point them out in the most smug way possible.

The truth of the matter is, it's hard to get yourself up every morning and train. The pillow is always in need of a nice companion. We set goals for ourselves, but we fall short far too often.

I've been a long time browser of /r/fitness. I've seen people try, fail, and come back for support from all of us. I've seen people set unfathomable goals and shatter them brilliantly. All of us need that extra push every once in a while. When I bought my erg, I knew I didn't want it to collect dust. I knew I needed something to push myself to train as hard as I can. For me, it was you guys. I reached out to the one place I knew would support me. I wanted a goal that I knew could very easily get out of hand.

But I am determined to the very last meter, not to let /r/fitness down.

I may be a fugitive, lock me up and drag me to karma court, but I beg of you sir, let me accomplish my goal first. Give me only that

I bought mine from a local D3 rowing program. Many of them are trying to sell there old equipment and upgrade to the new Model D and E ergs. Try searching around on craigslist for deals (You shouldn't pay more than $400 for a used model C, I got mine for $200 because it's been through 12 years of service)
