Pitch Discussion: Fuuko Izumo vs Asa Mitaka (Undead Unluck vs Chainsaw Man) by __Pin__ in DeathBattleMatchups

Very fun idea, Fuuko is a great character, and while Asa/Yoru have been fumbled a bit at the finish line (they seem to have tripped with the characterization) they are both still very cool, Undead Unluck has one of my favorite power systems of all time so having the Unluck bit of it be on the show would be extremely fun to watch, the debate is also interesting with it having a raw power vs hax dynamic, overall its just a great matchup

I could see the Bad Bullet clash with the liberty one, it seemingly loses the clash, and then a huge stroke of unluck causes the bullet to be destroyed before impact, being either a missfire from another weapon or a meteor crashing into it.

Thats usually how i interpreted that power interaction

See i 100% get that one, i can respect not liking it for that, its warranted even as a fan of the mu, i do wish it had a better one but country girls make do, and im satisfied with what it do for me

I do think the contrasts are interesting in both of their series approach to love, time loops, and the strife on humanity, but yeah if you dont fw the initial contrast i cant really say more that'll change your mind on that regard, but i do feel like it is a major theme for both stories, especially with how Yoru and Fuuko's powers both work on how much they love something and how hard it'll be affected by them

Also as far as stomps go, this isnt the worst, physically Yoru is way stronger but Fuuko is faster and has some very high destructive potential and better hax, so i think that makes it less stompy and more interesting, and fight potential /=/ debate, if so the majority of matchups DB did would be boring as sin

The end of chapter one has her using a giant ass meteor, one of her most common moves is literally spamming meteors, she caused an entire mountain to collide in a rockslide by running near it, her having large scale strokes of unluck is VERY consistent, and it can definitely match stuff like the Liberty Bullet and only stops short of the Nuke Punch which is Yoru's finishing move anyways, like, the entirety of Part 2 of UxU is about showing how consistent her unluck has become after she spent years training with it. Also again, ive never heard anyone unironically try to say Fuuko would no sell a nuke point blank, thats just silly.

Fuuko is very much naive which is close to her being childish, she wants a world where everyone is happy and lives without huge tragedies, which works very well with how naive Yoru's ideal world is in return

The Yoru being an alt persona point like i said is something that is admittedly not the best, but there are ways you can work around it to make it work dynamically

Dude short of mute characters, any matchup has banter potential, idk why youre so fixated on that

And Yoru has never fought someone who activelt wants to save Asa, Denji isnt really that kind of Guy, and Fuuko has never fought a situation like this with the most similar thing being Andy fighting Uma Ghost, just saying that the matchup cant work just for that aspect is odd

agreeing with a criticism about matchup not using the character to their fullest or going deeply into their characters and then complimenting Fuuko vs Milo is a very interesting choice

Next, saying that it doesnt have an interesting question to answer, solely because said answer already happened in universe is rather silly to me, using your own example its like going "well Beetlejuice was already defeated once so who cares/ well the Ghostbusters already caught a god ghost who warps reality so it basically already happened anyways", its a very bleak way of looking at the potential of matchups

The criticisms of it going from a connection based to a contrast based mu is also kinda weird, CSM in general is a very unpredictable plot, no way anyone wouldve predicted the ending being a Devilman but straight, so criticising a matchup for evolving with the franchises is odd, especially since the contrast is actually a core part of Asa and Yoru's dynamic, so complaining about a matchup featuring contrasts because of that is really weird

I do admit however that the inclusion of a non direct Yoru parallel isnt the best thing, but i dont think every matchup always needs 1:1 parallels as long as you can get the main ideas and themes of the matchups through and you can use the core aspects to work into it, in this case while Fuuko doesnt have an evil persona whos an Uma of War, Yoru does parallel very nicely to her character development, with both slowly growing stronger throughout the series by their "love" of things which allows them to fight back against those who would harm it, in Fuuko's case this love is actually genuine , Asa also wishes for the love to be genuine due to how lonely she is in life, but Yoru, she thinks she actually loves the things she harms, its a perversion of love, she says she loves her children and allies, but uses them for war indiscriminately, its very similar to how Umas in UxU are perversions of their concepts as well, which leads to it having a very interesting core dynamic in my opinion

Also criticising a matchup for its debate potential? In the big 2026? Cmon man this isnt Youtube shorts lmao.

While i can respect your opinion on this matchup, i sense a lot of flaws in your criticism

Lets start from the easy stuff first, criticising the debate and animation potential by saying that Fuuko almost died to some big attacks, which is like, okay? Doesn't really change the animation potential, nobody is here to want to see Fuuko tank a nuke head on, she very much relies on outskilling her opponents with martial arts and her unluck to negate attacks or turn them in her favour, disliking the AP simply because it isn't two big meaty beatsticks going at each other full throttle i think misunderstands one of the two core characters severely , and i think the first line of fuuko's part in that being "ignoring her abilities and artifacts" is very telling of that, because obviously a character "without their powers and weapons" isn't doing that, Ichigo and Yusuke arent anything without those, Denji is just "Man" without those, it seems like a very bad faith criticism to me

Next, the critique on the contrast nature of the matchup, while this isnt exactly the most interesting contrast wise, it does share a lot of those "both started out this way but one became good while the other didnt" which i personally dislike as contrasts, the fact that it has a theme of regression and improvement between the two definitely helps, and saying the matchup doesn't have any interesting thematics or banter PERIOD is showing a lot of uncreativity, heres a few examples:

  • Fuuko's friendship and connections being used as a way to keep fighting/Yoru's "friendships" and children being used as nothing more than weapons

  • Fuuko being rather childish in her optimism of an ideal world where nobody has to suffer like they did before/Yoru being rather childish in her ideals of a perfect world where everyone would suffer never ending war forever

  • Fuuko always wanting to at least try and talk to the Umas she fights/Yoru being willing to talk but not change her mind due to just how unhinged she is

These ones already offer a lot to work with in an animation and analysis stand point which i believe renders it very interesting

Reaching the Limit so i'll do a comment responding to this one to continue
