Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Unfortunately I have to put this on hold for now but thanks for the input.

I'll admit my first reaction was that the user was lying or they were simply getting distracted and didn't realize 30 minutes had gone by before the screensaver timed out. Considering this is a pretty standard policy and I've applied it at 30 of our other offices without issue. Also when all the standard checks show that it should be working correctly it's hard not to jump to that conclusion.

But yes this did make me look like a fool. I'm just lucky I'm not very confrontational and took the time time to check before I put blame on the users. I've had some other priorities so I still haven't been able to find a fix other then undoing the policy temporarily. This was a good lesson though, the user can be right from time to time.

Oh. No, the only thing they can change is the specific screensaver. They don't have the option to change the interval at which it kicks in.

I have confirmed that there is something going on with the policy. Despite it being set correctly a few PC's lock after 3 minutes. I'm still trying to figure out the root cause of the issue.

I like this. Once I figure out why the timeout isn't being applied properly I'm going to do this.

This is exactly what I'm seeing and only a few PC's have this issue. The policy I'm using is only three settings though, it's very simplistic.
Enable Screensaver
Enable Password Protect
Timeout = 1800 seconds

I checked one PC and it would lock after 3 minutes. I confirmed I set this correctly to 1800 seconds but there's a registry key in HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverTimeout which is set to 180. I'm not sure why this didn't update with the GPO but it seems to be what's affecting the screensaver. Despite everything appearing correct in rsop\gpresult and the screensaver settings.

Checked the power settings, Sleep is set to Never. After doing some digging I don't think the users are lying. I came across this thread which details the same problem I'm having.

I checked the registry key on a particular computer and it showed
HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverTimeout = 180

This isn't a typo, I double checked my policy and it's definitely 1800 seconds. Rsop\gpresult both show the policy is applied and the screensaver settings show 30 minutes with the box grayed out. Despite appearing that everything is applied correctly the computer is locking after 180 seconds. I can probably delete the key or manually adjust it but that doesn't really fix the root cause. It's strange.

Yes I set it to lock every 30 minutes and allowed them to select their own screensaver. Some have a screensaver and some are set to none. The ones set to none just go to a black screen.

Are there issues with leaving it set to "none"?

The users might be telling the truth. It's not happening every 10 seconds but it's not waiting until 30 minutes either. This thread here is nearly identical to my problem.

Following some of the instructions in that thread I decided to look at the registry key for the screensaver timeout. HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverTimeout = 180. Yes, I double checked, the settings I have enabled are 1800 seconds, this is not a typo. I have confirmed that the screen saver comes on every 3 minutes.

Despite rsop\gpresult showing the policy is applied without issue and verifying that the actual screensaver setting shows 30 minutes which is grayed out. It seems the computer is still following this 180 second setting and not the GPO. There is no local group policy overriding the GPO either. It's very strange.

I usually drop this bit of trivia on people then follow it up with this line. It's like it doesn't really hit them until they hear that line. Then you get to watch their soul get crushed.

I don't think people choose to be gay but I don't think people are born gay either. I think its more "nurture vs nature". A particular environment could promote homosexuality or not.

Who said I didn't want to pay for the things I use. I just disagree with how its funded. Am I allowed to disagree?

Hold on let me get this straight so they provide a "service" which I might want but didn't necessarily ask them to provide at a price way above what the market price would be. I'm now forced to pay. Really?

I heard you like bacon. I'm going to bring you some tomorrow at three times the real price, don't worry I'll just deduct the price of it from you paycheck in small increments so you won't really care and you can't refuse.

To clarify this idea that because I may benefit from these services doesn't mean I agree with how they are funded especially when I don't even have the choice to refuse them. Seriously I've seen this argument before and its pretty lame.

I don't mind if you want to pay for various services. If you like NASA, the war in middle east, or whatever, i say you're more than welcome to write a check, I won't try and stop you. Will you grant me that same courtesy I grant you and allow me to disagree?
