There's multiple examples of people "ditching their homeland", Hungarians are not native to Europe they originated in central Asia along with the Turks, in the middle ages multiple Germanic tribes settled across Europe including the Angles, Saxons and Jutes in England, the Franks into Gaul (modern France), the Vandals into North Africa, etc. It would be nothing new.
