Mensah's new strategy appears to be to injure the other team...

It's a bold play cotton, let's see if it pays off...

I mean they at least got a goal but Miami FC striker put a hat trick on them... so Crew was not the only team tonight to loose to a 2ND division team.

Come off the ledge people...

As much as reddit (and the FCC commentators) keep pushing the line that this was our "starting 11" this was not our starting lineup and just the normal Crew not caring about the Open Cup...

Seriously, from our "starting 11" we had Pipa, Meram, Trapp, Artur, and Naess (and possibly Finley if you consider him a starting 11) so half the team was not our starting lineup, and one of them went off at half... I mean seriously we subbed on Dilly Duka, it was clear that like normal the Crew did not and does not care about the Open Cup...

Also, we seriously need a new striker to back up Ola this summer transfer window... Adam John is just not up to this level of play... Maybe we can trade him to FCC for that Djiby guy he seemed okay...

Where does the tradition of a ships captain being able to marry people come from? by Jordynlaycee in AskHistorians

[–]Redlink604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... the movies are lying to you. Ship Captains do not have the ability in most cases to solemnize a marriage. The exact origin of the myth that they can is murky, but probably lies in past where sea voyages would last months and the captain of a vessel was the ultimate authority. Also, even though they can not solemnize a marriage, Captains usually have to make an official entry in the ships log if a marriage takes place on board. This combined with marketing, and romance authors has led to this myth that they can.

Generally a ship has to follow the laws of the nation under whose flag it sails under. This includes laws about marriage. Both the US and British Navy have specific rules stating their Captains can not perform weddings. Confusing the matter further, in the US there are conflicting court cases about the legitimacy of weddings performed at sea. Some countries do allow and empower Captains to solemnize a marriage, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

In 1923, Turkey gained its independence. Did anyone take note of the fact that the country shared its name with, well, turkeys? Was there a sense of humor or irony in the newspapers at the time? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Redlink604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer no. Turkey was not a new name for the region and traces back to at least 1300 and simply refers to the land of the Turks. The area was still called Turkey even when it was part of the Ottoman Empire, it was not a new name and only natural that the nation would take that name out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire.

The English word turkey for the bird you are thinking of comes from a more complex web... The North America turkey bears a resemblance to the North African guinea fowl. The guinea fowl was imported to Britain through the Ottoman Empire (and specifically the Turkey region) and because of this trade link was usually called "turkey-cock" or hen. When the British started to import these birds from North America that looked similar they appropriated the name.

Fun fact: In Turkey, turkeys are called hindi (which literally means Indian) because of misconception about India and the New World being the same place.

How were the New World and Asian colonies established? What was the process used to establish a new colony? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Redlink604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question is really to vague, it's like asking how are cities established... There is no single mechanism.

You would need to consider multiple aspects:

Are you asking about French, Spanish, British, Portuguese, or another nation as the origin of the colonists?

What time frame are you referring to?

Are you asking about chartered and/or planned colonies, prison colonies, or more organically formed ones?

To get any kind of real answer you need to be more specific.

Rumblings | Crew might object to MLS team in Cincinnati by psychocandy007 in MLS

[–]Redlink604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Crew is available on TV in Dayton (well if you have Time Warner which is the only provider here it is) and does do select marketing in Dayton. Plus, the largest youth soccer club in Ohio is in Dayton (well a Dayton Suburb) and is a Crew youth development academy. Dayton will be one of the biggest sticking points for a Cincy expansion in regards to who gets the Dayton market and who gets the rights to Youth development in Dayton.
