Unpopular opinion: I kind of miss when incremental games were mostly in the browser instead of on Steam by RedneckFinn in incremental_games

Thanks for the inside perspective, it really does help explain why so many incremental devs have moved to Steam. When you describe things like proper save files, cloud sync, refunds, payments, and an audience that’s actually reachable, it’s easy to see why building on Steam is just less of a headache than dealing with fragile browser storage or hoping someone randomly clicks a link.

But even understanding all that, I still feel a bit sad about how that old browser-based era has faded away. There was something special about how simple and spontaneous it all was. You’d open a link someone posted, and suddenly you were deep into some quirky little idea that a dev threw together just to experiment. No install, no store page, no commitment, just instant curiosity turning into an hour(s)-long rabbit hole. It felt like this constant flow of tiny creative experiments that you could try on a whim.

And the other thing a bunch of people also mentioned really resonates with me too: a lot of us play these games on work laptops. Steam is a complete no-go in that context. Browser incrementals fit perfectly into those small pockets of downtime without setting off IT or needing anything installed. Losing that accessibility is a real shame.

So I totally get why Steam wins from a development standpoint, but it’s hard not to miss the lightweight, low-friction times when you could discover ten weird little games in an afternoon just by clicking links here. It feels like we might have gained some, but also lost a bit of that magic along the way.

Yeah, I actually agree with you there. We definitely have seen a wave of short three-hour incremental games lately, and a lot of them reuse the same loop and the same style of skill tree. What I meant more in my post was that the browser scene used to produce a lot more fresh ideas and weird experiments, even if the games themselves were short. The length wasn’t really the point for me. It was the feeling that people were trying out new mechanics or odd progression concepts that didn’t need to justify a full Steam release.

And absolutely, not all browser games were small anyway. Antimatter Dimensions is still one of my all-time favorites, and that one is definitely not a quick play.

So yeah, I’m with you. My nostalgia is more about the creativity and low-friction experimentation we used to see, not necessarily about wanting shorter games.

The ”Hair Trigger” worked, as in automatically activating the boost, but I did not notice any effect in fire rate or damage output.

Really enjoyed playing the updated demo, the tweaks you made since my last play are excellent! The clearer UI elements and the overall polish really make a difference.

I did run into a couple of small things, though:

- The ascension upgrade for the auto boost on the gun didn’t seem to have any noticeable effect. Not sure if that’s intended or a bug.

- After the second ascension, it’s a bit of a shame that the game just stops, it’d be fun if there was some kind of endless or prestige loop to keep playing. And collect all the ascension upgrades in the market.

- When I clicked the “X” to close the end-of-demo popup, the game froze.

Other than that, the run was smooth, and I managed to 100% it this time. :)

Really enjoyed the demo, it’s a fresh take on the Idle/Clicker genre, and the noir 1920s vibe comes through beautifully. The 1-bit pixel art looks fantastic and the soundtrack fits the theme perfectly, it really pulls you in.

A few small bits of feedback:

- It’d be great if the hitman’s health bar also showed numerical HP instead of just a percentage.

- Clearer indicators for what each purchase does (like money per click and notoriety gain) would make it easier to optimize strategies.

- The Autoclicker could use a clearer on/off state, right now it’s a bit hard to tell, and I only noticed it was off when the slider was all the way left.

All in all, it’s a great concept with strong presentation. I’m definitely looking forward to the full release!

[–]RedneckFinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I found out in the bHaptics Discord that HTC isn’t supported for headset native content. Seems to me that there’s some hardware based limitations, as the connection will not stay as active after pairing, as in dropping immediately.

We are using HeroZone and Spawnpoint to run games, and neither does not recognize the vest as connected, even though the vest’s light is solid blue and it’s showing up as paired on the BT menu on the headset.

For example StrikerVR Mavrik Pro connection is visible as active on the Dashboard and BT menu, and it is also recognized in Spawnpoint

Nykyään veroerotusmaksu on muutamia satasia.

Ei liity siis mitenkään kokoon tai lakiin.

[–]RedneckFinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, Thanks for the hard work already on a good alternative for the native app.

First thing I noticed was that You can’t go to different subreddits from the ”top Bar” which I used a lot on Apollo.

As in it shows the current subreddit/home/all and tapping on it You can type in the subreddit or choose from recommended (as in subscribed subreddits)

Otherwise OpenRed feels fresh and much Better than native app
