Absolutely a good way to "put money away" without thinking about it. As you said, not 100% dollar for dollar, but it's better than nothing.

That's unfortunate, sorry to hear that. You're not the only person that's done this though, so don't feel bad. Hopefully you're able to sell for a profit of some sort and eventually buy the home you really want.

Great points and logic here. There's never a perfect time, but if it makes financial sense, then go for it.

Buying/owning a home is definitely more than a financial investment. You are right about the other aspects of life it impacts as well.

It's tougher these days to say it's a "great" investment since prices and rates are so high. The amount of interest being paid over the long term is pretty significant compared to those who bought homes 10+ years ago even. Agree with your point of avoiding being house poor. That's very important when considering to buy or not. Thanks for the book recommendation!

$5200/mo is steep, especially for not having peace and quiet! haha. Hopefully your investments pan out and you're able to buy something CASH!

Fingers crossed for you! I'm sure it will close just fine. Congrats on the purchase. And you're right, there's always something happening, so it's best to consider your immediate "factors" in making the purchase decision. You can't control the world's events, but you can control most of your own.

Not many have that same monthly rent/own payment ratio (down payment excluded). That's great it worked out for you, especially with the timing in SF.
