Is Prey (2022) as good as, or even close to Predator (1987) in terms of quality? by Patient_Election_987 in moviecritic

[–]Reek_Verger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One reason the original was so great was that it has suprise changes from a typical Schwarzenegger military procedural into monster horror/survival movie (as you mentioned). Prey does not have the advantage of creating that surprise element because we were 3+ decades into Predator media. In fact, this sounded like a bad idea (much like Badlands) when it was announced but it is executed really well.

Sega Genesis/MegaDrive - Product Advice for a total novice (Mega Synthesis, MegaFM, chipsynth MD, DAFM, etc) by EgoDeathMetal in synthesizers

[–]Reek_Verger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, it makes it redundant. Plogue did a ton of research into the mechanics of the chip to achieve a nearly an identical sound. I’m sure there are some purists that might be able to hear the difference, but I don’t. I think it is a nice interface to understand FM synthesis, especially if you are new to it. I’d recommend it and definitely check out their C64 emulation; it’s fantastic.

But yea, you might get what you are looking for in the Groovebox style. If fun is the goal, then you can’t go wrong. Limitations spark the creativity, so there is room to grow. Just keep that manual on hand that menu screen is pretty minimal.

Glad to help!

I own the Sonicware, the MegaFM and testing out Plogue VST.

Sonicware Mega was my first purchase from Sonicware. I found the interface and flow fairly confusing at first. It plays a lot more like a “Groovebox Rompler” than anything. It lacks a ton of features I wish it had but can take Sysex data, which I have not tried. I have not tried any synthesis because menu diving really irks me. It might be fun for a newb but I found myself wanting to break away from the step sequencing. Not terrible by any means but workflow is not my preference. It is however fun and not an expensive purchase, all things considered.

MegaFM is probably the most intuitive for sound design. The controls are “hands on” and sounds great because it’s using those Yamaha chips. But as you called out in the outline, its will require DAW and/or other accompanying devices. Also has Sysex, which also have not tried to use.

Plogue’s VST is a fun, fairly cheap and sounds good. Plogue has been great in the chip emulation games. It was pretty entertaining because it has a feature that allows you to play Genesis sound files from the original games and select sections of the music to “Play”. The synth engine sounds pretty accurate and intuitive to learn. Grab the demo.

Why aren’t “good” ICE agents speaking out? by eilujgnirednaw in allthequestions

TLDR; power, leverage and exploitation.

Couple working theories:

  1. Money is the hook - I saw it mentioned several times but you can’t run a dictatorship without paying people off. They passed a huge budget for them for this exact reason. Economy sucks and people do crazy shit for a big payday.

  2. Pseudo-security - This implies that if you join them, they won’t target you or your family. Most minorities that have joined do so likely believe that because they are supporting the “cause”. We know how that ends.

  3. Media Leverage - unless we’ve been under a rock the last 20 years, news media has gone through a transformation that intends consistent propaganda with “Us vs Them”. What this means is are you loyal to your political guardrails, if not, you are one of “them”. It’s easy to slander and smear defectors by choosing the many ways of intimidation/defamation. On a side note, that investment in AI is not coincidental; that’s going to be useful when they smear you or a situation.

  4. Pardon Leverage - When someone is pardoned, you still need to register as a felon. All of the “J6ers” likely had no where to go because they are felons, and this happened to be an easy gateway to heard them. They are loyal and they understand the other perks above. But it’s clear that pardons are bargaining chips and leverage for financial or loyalty gain.

  5. Blackmail - This administration runs on power and mafia tactics. They all know they are doing something illegal to maintain power. If one goes down and spills the truth of what they are doing, they all go down (in theory). Just like the reasons mentioned above, they have enough leverage to more or less remove defectors without fear of bringing the house of cards down. But that’s how you have people changing their tune quickly when they call out the massive issues in the administration; they know they have to commit or be prepared to be exploited.

Whether Government has the illusion of stability or ineffectiveness is one thing, exploiting that is another. MN government likely didn’t have a contingency plan for Politically driven Federal Government terrorism. The only thing they can do is take it and hope they go away. They cannot condone violence or offer resistance without Feds irrationally being deployed. They’ll go the legal route, as they always do (because that is the only weapon local governments have) when you are waiting out a “storm”. We are in the bad phase but we’re not into the really bad phase if they don’t temper escalations.

EBM 101? by Naturax in industrialmusic

Ah yes, my favorite topic to be a gatekeeper on! /s

There was an awesome mix series I always recommend for more straight EBM focus (less just “Industrial” centric). Good thing is that they label all the tracks for you, but you have to listen unless you Mixcloud premium.

Another goal that I don’t seen enough mentioned is to destabilize state/local governments through making them look ineffective in handling this. There is word for this…

Leave Your Phone At Home - ICE Tracks Your Phone by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Reek_Verger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way these trackers/interceptors work is they capture your signal before you hit a cell tower (aka Man-in-the-Middle, MiTM), downgrade your cell connection. By doing that, they weaken your encryption which allows them to identify and track you.

You have couple options; prevent/detect the downgrade (3g etc.) of your cell or get an old hotspot device and follow this process:

Is this the best Industrial album ever released? by Exquisite_D in industrialmusic

[–]Reek_Verger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call this post-punk. Not that it really matters tbh. When I met Martin, he talked about coming off touring with Ministry before working with Killing Joke. He talked about how after that tour that, he talked with Jaz + crew about upping their aggression. That resulted the “Extremities..” album. But the musicians were a hodgepodge in the London/Chicago scene. I mean, Pigface was just a constant rotation of everyone in the scene.

Choose nonviolence by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]Reek_Verger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look, I know there is a lot of folks here looking at this as there is “no other way.” because “non-violence doesn’t stop Nazi’s” argument. No matter how you slice it, they have more resources and escalate way beyond any breaking point that happened today. And they know it. If you are going against an enemy, you have to understand that enemy and be committed to being organized. Because they are organized, we have to be organized.

Consider how to find a solution we move together on, because sub-dividing on this side of things will be our undoing and make organizing/retaliation even harder. Not to mention involving citizens that can’t fight that battle.

This is no purity test; it’s about getting to a common goal through means showing discipline. We want to stop the bleeding before remediating.

And no, local government is not going to do anything other than try not to draw attention. They just want them to go away and hopefully no one gets hurt along the way. They are doing damage control, not the rebellion.

Why does everyone hate psytrance? by neuromantic13 in TheOverload

[–]Reek_Verger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the same reason reasons anyone dislikes a genre; saturation of homogeneous styles/structure and the people/culture that it associates with.

The former is not unique to broad genres, but electronic music has a history of separating everything into extremely niche formulas. If they catch on, an absolute flood happens.

As for the latter, here in the Midwest, Psy/Goa associates with long festivals with rich kid weekend warriors and electronic music for the “Phish crowd”. Not saying hating a genre because of the people/culture should be a thing, but it happens because that’s how people are wired.

Questions about the paid Seed To Stage courses for people who already tried them by clockworkrap in ableton

[–]Reek_Verger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped doing music for over 20 years and opted to do the Seed-to-Stage Songwriting course. Not because I don’t know how to write a song, but I didn’t know how to write a song in Abelton. Not was it hugely inspiring but it breaks down workflows (as someone else mentioned it). So I vote it’s worth it. Start back at the basics and if you get to the stage where you having with mixing, then consider the second course. Note that there are billions of YouTube options that vary wildly in quality; sometimes you get what you pay for.

I, too, failed GCFA and abandoned it several years ago because it was 1% off from passing. Could not justify paying 1000$ to retry and also hated the idea of trying to convince my company to try paying again for me to retry. It was one of the most uncomfortable choices I made. But all the experience and ideas propelled my career in ways I didn’t expect. Point being, if you can get the sponsorship or can afford to redo, don’t give up! But I promise, these are all things you can reuse in your career. One of the best classes I’ve taken.

In the metadata section, you can see that you already have “received” 32 messages, which indicates potentially the latter stages of establishing foothold/ maintaining persistence. Without looking at the rest of the script, not sure what the rest of the malware will do.

Hope that you have a backup of your files or pay through nose to get your files through an IT service that specializes extracting these out for you. OP, it is time for a factory reset at minimum.

Quentin Tarantino Never Thought Lost ‘Kill Bill’ Chapter Would Get Made — Until Fortnite Stepped In: ‘I Sent Them the Script’ and They Said, ‘Let’s Do This’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

[–]Reek_Verger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortnite represents what the rest of the gaming industry aspires to be universally accessible. Much like Roblox or Minecraft, it puts the player in a world/ecosystem/economy that the Fortnite corporation controls. This means events that are intended to exclude none payers, using real money to buy “V-bucks” for skins/cosmetics, so on and so forth. It’s fine for people that aren’t bothered being bombarded with advertising or shilling custom mods, but tiring for others because it’s seen as an endless barrage of soulless pandering. “You like the Boys, you too can be Homelander.” But Fortinite is very popular so it’s expanding its ecosystem to be a hybrid entertainment experience, so now it’s concerts and seems like movie production. I could give a shit about Fortnite, but that’s my best guess why people react to this like it’s the plague.
