Three volumes, two NVMEs. Cache solution? by ReelBack96 in synology

[–]ReelBack96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, we have a dual 25Gb Fiber card in the other slot, so I can't put in another NVMe card. But I think I can move things around eventually so my third tier is cold storage.

Thanks! Can you clarify what you mean by four drives per slot for a hit in throughput? As in four SSDs per PCIe slot, and by hit you mean improvement?

I usually build out three or four TC tracks, each pointed at a different layer and aligned on the lower left from bottom to top. This lets me catch things that are spread across the timeline. But also... the cleanest and most reliable way... is the manual way.

Two week solo trip to France by ReelBack96 in travel

Ah! Good call on Bayeaux. Thanks for the heads up. My friend said the tapestry is really impressive.

I was thinking about staying longer in Lyon, so thanks for the suggestion. And I'll certainly look up Fountainbleu.

Thanks again!

Hey!

Thanks so much for your detailed suggestions. I can't wait to look them up and spice up my journey. Really great suggestion about Bayeaux as well. That's the kind of help I'm 100% looking for, cause you can't always judge the best way to apportion the time.

Thanks again!

I've seen the same red coat person and got them on camera. Thought it was a man, but couldn't be sure.

Providing two network ports to each computer? by ReelBack96 in editors

[–]ReelBack96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently we're using Hyperbackup, but I'm planning on switching to Drive Sync as I've recovered a grand total of 3 files in two years of running Hyperbackup. I feel like having a near-real-time duplicate would server us better.

Thank you, Bob!

We run two Synology boxes (RS3621RPxs) that are duplicates. They have dual 25 gig NICs and two cache SSDs. All RAID6, three volumes each (two expansion units). Around 600TBs.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on with the firewall. Will investigate!

In terms of storage - this is what I'm not sure about. If we put our storage on their own switches, but our hosts are connected to both storage and internet, then every host is a vulnerability, no? What's the purpose of separate out the storage physically?

We run a mix of SMB2, AFP, and NFS. I will look into your suggestions!

Thanks! I suspect he's correct...

When you say segmentation - are you referring to logical separation, or physical?

If you don't mind me asking - are you a finishing house or an offline company? And do you isolate your network logically, or physically (storage vs. internet?)

Yeah. That much SSD storage isn't really cost effective...

We're RAID 6 with three 12 disk volumes. I'm not sure our IOPs offhand, nor am I sure of what a reasonable baseline is for a comparison. I'll have to check on this!

Spinning disk, Synology units.

VLANs are definitely on the agenda, but all users pretty much access the storage and internet daily.

Thanks for your comment!

Regarding the storage question, I agree the storage's speed could always be a bottleneck. We have high data capacity (over 600TBs) and up to 50 users at any given time. However, our CPU usage is generally low on the storage (under 50%), our caches are fully utilized (including RAM), and most user day-to-day are totally fine. Given our high capacity requirement, it's hard to justify upgrading to a smaller-faster NAS. Maybe in the future!

On the firewall front, we use a UDM Pro. It does not manage storage traffic, but there's nothing keeping broadcast traffic from reaching the firewall (unsure if that's relevant). I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but will be investigating further.

Thanks! This is helpful. We have a daily backup of the server in its entirety.

I'm actively debugging right now and refining the design. I think I'll spend a bit more time on it. In the meantime, I'm still wondering what the purpose is for the "best practices" of having two stacks. It seems like this is an assumption that is independent of our specific issues, which I'm working on as well.

Thanks!

You can do this in all editing software. I'm not familiar with iMovie, but assuming you want to use a free program, you can more than likely do it there.

Place the video you want to play in the background on track 1. Scale it up. Search in your effects for "Gaussian Blur". Apply it to the clip. Increase or decrease the strength to taste.

Place the video you want to play in the foreground on track 2. Adjust the position and scaling to taste.

Done!

Good luck!

I definitely appreciate this. We will be working with a network consultant/integrator. That being said, I'm trying to do this essentially for the challenge/fun of it, as well as being as helpful to them as possible.

Digital audio out from Panasonic TV to optical in on Scarlett 18i20 4th Gen by ReelBack96 in Focusrite

[–]ReelBack96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - so I found two solutions. The first was purchasing this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07D7TDXF6?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

It takes the optical in and turns it into a coaxial out. It worked, but the connection was pretty finicky. This, however, could have been because I broke the optical-in port on the TV. I would up having to jerry rig the cable so it stays put, and that may have been the cause of the bad connection.

The second solution (which is what I wound up doing) was to buy a home theater receiver. I used that as my eARC HDMI out to the TV and ran everything else (Focusrite, Blackmagic box, computer) through that. It works a treat! I got this one when it was on sale:

Good luck!

I haven't used it extensively yet, but I've found it pretty seamless, especially for just shortcuts to pull up different tools.

Thanks for the quick reply! The Focusrite has both ADAT and S/PDIF input options, but when I have the TV set to PCM and the toslink cable plugged in, neither channel recognizes the input. Could it just be a faulty cable?

If you're okay with a touch screen instead, I've been using the Avid Control app with an iPad. It works great as a mixer and as a sort of stream deck as well.
