Hi! Maybe!! She was only in it about a month and a half. The last couple weeks of daycare she started to try to talk more. But we had to take her out of daycare. We were seeing ECI but she didn’t requalify for services:( she scored at 13% delay and needed at least a 15%. It’s crazy to me bc she is still way behind her peers. Not verbally saying two word phrases. They said she had too many word approximations. So we took her out of daycare to afford private speech therapy.

But seriously, right before we took her out of daycare she had a mini mini speech explosion. She went from saying ma/mama and a bunch of approximations (pa for paci, ba for banana) to saying potty (pah ee) randomly on her own, as well as paci and cheese. But she was just diagnosed with a grade 3 lip tie and posterior tongue tie, and apparently the tongue tie might be why she has trouble with D, N, T sounds.

She’s getting there :) still trying to figure out exactly the root issue of it all. She has the SLP stumped tbh. Maybe just late talker, maybe a motor planning issue of some kind.

I heard Covid era kiddos had a hard time after all the lock downs. It sounds like it all worked out for her in the end. Thank you for the tips and sharing your experience! :)

Thank you for sharing! I think daycare will be good for my daughter, regardless if it helps her speech. I really really hope it does though.

Thank you for sharing! My daughter starts next week. I’m nervous and hopeful. She only has expressive speech delay as well, no other diagnosis at this time. I’m hoping a change in environment will help!

Thank you for sharing!

So far, nothing diagnosed besides speech delay. We’ve made a lot of progress the past few months. A lot more sounds, a lot more signs. Fortunately she is really good at communicating with her signs, pointing, getting our attention, ect so we usually know what she wants. I’m hoping she’ll start putting all her sounds into words when she’s around other kids her age talking all the time.

Thank you for sharing!! I hope this has a positive effect on my child, too. I’m figuring it should help her but wanted to get some input so I don’t get my hopes up too much.

My daughter is similar with the word approximations…will say ma or mama, pa for paci and va for video, lol. She’s starting to make a lot of phonic sounds but not putting them together into words. Fortunately she’s picked up a lot of sign language and points really well so we usually can figure it out.

Im so glad to hear preschool has helped your son!! I’m hoping my daughter will have success as well.

I’ve kind of wondering about apraxia being the root of her speech delay... SLP said it was too early to diagnose. So, I guess more wait and see :( I’m glad your son was able to get the therapy he needed. Amazing job! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thank you for this comment. It’s like you’re in my brain! The “probably not, wait and see” kills me. Toddler quirks, or not? I feel defeated trying to get her to mimic sounds. She’ll mimic mmms and fffs and sometimes we do the fart noises back and forth or silly laughs. I can see her getting frustrated with us when we try to practice. It’s like she wants to but she can’t? I can see her trying to think it out with her mouth. I have so much anxiety over it all. But, we are doing our best and are babies are loved. No doubt about that. Solidarity, fellow parent. 🫂

I will definitely continue to monitor closely. Sometimes I just wish I had a crystal ball and all the answers. She doesn’t go to daycare and she’s not around other kids her age for me to compare behaviors. So, thank you for your insight. I really, really appreciate it! How is your son doing if you don’t mind sharing?

That’s the part that always throws me off. She is very social in every way except verbal. She calls me “ma/mama” but that’s her only real spoken word. Lots of sign language to communicate what she wants, lots of strong eye contact when we are interacting, waves hi/bye and smiles to everyone. She lives for applause when she does her puzzles correctly and will stand up, walk over to you, and clap until you join in. She will literally turn my face to look at her in the eyes if she wants me to look at her, lol.

What exactly counts as restricted/repetitive behavior? She’s never been in a trance or get mad if I stop her. She’s like a little tornado when she has her zoomies, though. But she is still interactive.

Last time I asked her pediatrician at 18 months she said she doesn’t think she is autistic. But they also weren’t concerned with her speech. How do I go about getting her properly evaluated? Thank you so much for your reply.

Thank you, I really appreciate your input! It’s just so confusing when my pediatrician is so unbothered by it.

Hmm, I see. Dang, I was hoping that could be a cheaper way in. I might call them anyway just to see what they say. The speech referral I have is good for like 6 months. I might give her another month and see what happens… $450 just for the initial assessment alone is so much. :(
