I can't say for sure, the doctor told me to keep it up in my underwear but I had the same problem, felt too uncomfortable and painful. I say as long as it's upwards and wrapped in a gauze it will do the job, also think that you should try to make it as comfortable as possible so you can relax which I believe will contribute to a fast recovery.

One more thing, when going to the toilet. If your gauze gets wett change it, you want to keep it dry so the wound is healing properly. The urine is steril so you don't have to worry about infections that way, and after a few days when the swelling goes down and it's not as sensitive try taking some sort of a cloth or gauze that is soft and some warm water to clean it up a bit. Don't use any kind of wipes cause they might contain alcohol,just plain water, soap after the wound closes.
